Can latex mattresses get moldy?

The 30-second answer

Yes, latex mattresses can get moldy. One owner reported mold on the latex and coils inside a modular mattress from a moldy home. Control moisture and check damp areas, but remember that resistance is not the same as being mold-proof.

Can latex resist mold?

Some latex is described as mold-resistant, but that does not mean a whole mattress is mold-proof. Harvest Green says its natural organic latex resists mold. One owner reported mold on the latex and coils inside a modular mattress from a moldy home.

Mold needs moisture to grow. It can grow on fabric and upholstery as well as other materials. Another owner reported mold on the fabric of a natural-latex mattress. The latex underneath looked clean to that owner.

A report sampled five mattresses. One foam sample was above the report's threshold for active mold growth. The small sample found no statistically significant link between mold levels and material type.

What causes mold?

Moisture allows mold to grow when spores land on a wet surface. Leaks and floods can create the damp conditions mold needs. Mold can grow in dust, fabric and upholstery.

Act quickly after a spill, including a urine spill. Dry wet or damp materials within 24 to 48 hours after a leak or spill. In most cases, mold will not grow if you do. That is not a guarantee for a wet latex mattress. For more on moisture exposure, see Can a wet latex mattress get moldy?.

Can a mattress get moldy on the floor?

Yes. A mattress on the floor can get less airflow. Humidity can build up in and under it, making a damp place where mold can thrive. Mold can also grow on wood, so check the bed base as well as the mattress when looking for a moisture problem.

A raised, ventilated base is an option. For example, Peace Lily recommends a sturdy slatted base for its mattresses. It calls for slats and gaps that each measure 7 to 9 cm, plus at least 19 cm of floor clearance. It also calls for a center support rail for Double, Queen and King sizes. Those are Peace Lily's specifications, not a rule for every latex mattress.

If you use a mattress on the floor, you can prop it against a wall about once a week to refresh airflow and help reduce the likelihood of mold from moisture.

How can you prevent mold?

Keep moisture under control and act quickly when a spill or leak happens. Drying damp materials within 24 to 48 hours prevents mold growth in most cases, though it is not a guarantee for a mattress.

  • Find and remove the moisture source if you have mold in your home.
  • Keep indoor relative humidity below 60% if possible, ideally between 30% and 50%.
  • Ventilate areas with excess humidity, dampness or standing water.
  • For a large spill, Tuft & Needle advises pressing clean, dry cloths or paper towels onto its mattress. Repeat as needed to absorb liquid.
  • Wait until a cleaned area is completely dry before putting sheets and blankets back on. That is Tuft & Needle's advice for its mattresses.

Which mattress stains could be mold?

A spot or musty smell is a reason to look closer, but a mark alone does not prove mold. Mold can appear as spots of many colors and can smell musty.

Check the cover as well as the foam: mold can grow on fabric and upholstery. Some marks have other causes. For example, Spindle says heat can leave color changes or burn marks in its latex materials. A moldy odor associated with a mattress is also a reason to investigate for mold.

Replacement and cleaning

When should you replace a moldy mattress?

Consider replacement if water and mold have damaged the mattress. Such mattresses can seldom be saved. Restoration may be possible in limited cases. These include an item with sentimental value or contact with clean water for less than a few hours. Professional mattress sanitizing is recommended for a restoration attempt.

Mold can enter the spaces in porous materials, which are materials with small openings. It can be hard or impossible to remove completely. A clean-looking surface does not prove the inside is free of mold. For flooded homes, guidance says to throw out upholstered furniture if you can see or smell mold on it. It also says to throw it out if it was underwater. That guidance does not specifically name mattresses.

Throw out an innerspring mattress or box spring if it was partly or fully submerged in floodwater contaminated with sewage, pesticides or industrial chemicals. Even if floodwater was not contaminated, a mattress may need to be thrown out. It can be very hard to dry a mattress all the way through before mold grows. A mattress may have had contact with 1 to 2 inches of clean floodwater for only a few hours. In that case, guidance describes cleaning the surface and drying it with airflow. It also recommends professional sanitizing. If sanitizing does not remove a musty odor, discard the mattress.

Can you clean mold from latex?

Do not assume surface cleaning removes mold inside. Mold can be hard or impossible to remove completely from porous materials. Mattresses damaged by water and mold can seldom be saved. Consider professional sanitizing if you attempt to restore a mattress.

Before cleanup, find and remove the moisture source. When cleaning mold, wear eye protection, an N-95 respirator and protective gloves. People with breathing problems, such as asthma, or weakened immune systems should not enter a mold-damaged building. After a hurricane or major flood, people with asthma, COPD or a weak immune system should not stay in a moldy home, even during cleanup.

A general mattress cleaning method is presented for early-stage mold only. It calls for vacuuming the mattress first. Then it calls for mixing equal parts water and rubbing alcohol that is at least 70% strength. Spray the area, leave it for 15 to 20 minutes, wipe away visible mold and dry the mattress fully. This is not a tested latex-mattress method. Surface cleaning does not establish that mold inside has been removed.

Avoid treating bleach as a latex-safe solution. An older standard covered latex foam hospital mattresses. It lists bleaching solutions as harmful to latex foam. For stains or spills on its natural latex products, Latex Systems recommends spot-cleaning with a damp cloth. It says to air- or fan-dry the product in ventilated shade, away from direct sunlight. This is not a mold-removal method. See How do you dry a latex mattress?.

Latex mattress mold FAQs

Can mold grow on the cover or wool quilting?

Yes. Mold can grow on fabric and upholstery. Wool textiles can also be affected under conditions that favor mold growth.

How often should you check under a latex mattress?

One general mattress guide suggests checking the bottom at least monthly, and more often in colder months. Teros advises checking its latex mattresses for moisture regularly. It says to rotate the mattress when the bottom feels moist. It suggests turning the mattress once a month to once every three months, depending on the home. That is a turning range, not a check schedule.

Can you keep a mattress from a moldy home?

Check it for signs of mold, including accessible interior layers. One owner took apart a modular mattress from a moldy home and found mold on its latex and coils. It had not appeared moldy before it was taken apart. Mattresses damaged by water and mold can seldom be saved, though some may be restored.

Is it safe to sleep on a possibly moldy mattress?

Use caution: mold exposure can cause symptoms for some people, though others have none. People with asthma should avoid mold exposure. If you think mold is affecting your health, see a health care provider.
