Poor fit: anyone who needs to buy a new one today, because Amazon shows it unavailable, Walmart shows it out of stock and Target carries no Safety 1st crib mattress at all; shoppers who want a showroom or in-store trial (none found); innerspring, hybrid, organic-cotton, GOTS or GOLS buyers (all models are fiber-core only, no organic certification found); parents wanting a firm/plush or dual-firmness choice on the base model (only the Deluxe Dual 2-in-1 and Canada's Grow with Me 2-in-1 flip); durability worriers, since cover cracking, flaking and middle sagging are the dominant complaint themes; anyone with a toddler above the 50 lb weight limit; people who need a sleep trial (there is none) or white-glove setup; and adult sleepers - Safety 1st sells no adult mattresses and no crib-mattress size beyond standard 52 x 27.5 in.

Comfort and firmness: which mattress fits you

Crib and toddler sleep only. Newborns and infants: Safety 1st Standard Firm, Deluxe Dual 2-in-1 in infant mode, Peaceful Lullabies, or the Canada Grow with Me and Little Angel - every model is a firm, flat 5 in surface. Toddlers: Deluxe Dual 2-in-1 (US) or Grow with Me 2-in-1 (Canada), which flip to a cushioned side for comfort.

Messy nights and reflux-style cleanups: Peaceful Lullabies or Heavenly Dreams Supreme Firm, the two with removable machine-washable covers, or the wipe-clean 100% vinyl Heavenly Dreams if you would rather not launder.

Chemical-sensitive or low-emission households: any model qualifies as GREENGUARD / GREENGUARD Gold with no flame-retardant chemicals, and the Supreme Firm and Peaceful Lullabies use cotton/wool/polyester cores with bamboo-rayon covers. Prices found: Heavenly Dreams Standard Firm $49.00 on Amazon; Peaceful Lullabies $53.25 at Walmart on clearance from a $69.00 list price (a $15.75 saving, flagged Clearance); the Canada-only 2019 lineup ran Heavenly Dreams CAD $89.99, Grow with Me 2-in-1 CAD $99.99 and Little Angel Bamboo CAD $129.99.

As of Sept 2026 neither live listing shows a purchasable price at all - Amazon says Currently unavailable and Walmart says out of stock - so any Safety 1st purchase now depends on leftover stock, third-party resellers or the used market. Value read: at $49-$69 these were among the least expensive GREENGUARD crib mattresses in the US.

So Safety 1st undercut Graco, Delta, Sealy and Newton by roughly 30 to 80 percent and matched Dream On Me and Kolcraft - but those rivals are in stock at Target today and Safety 1st is not, which changes the value equation from price to availability.

How well do the mattresses hold up?

Mixed, and this is the brand's weak spot. Amazon's AI-generated review summary of the Heavenly Dreams listing (read Sept 2026) says it plainly: while some customers report it holds up well over time, others mention it tends to get ripped up easily. The durability aspect is the only one of eight measured aspects that skews negative - 565 reviewers mention durability, 233 positive against 332 negative.

The recurring failure pattern in owner reports is the vinyl cover: cracks appearing after less than 8 months, splitting along seams by 10 to 11 months, and bits of plastic breaking and flaking off, with one parent reporting tearing and coming apart between March and November of the same year and worrying about swallowed fragments.

The second theme is structural sagging - one Walmart reviewer wrote that the mattress has sagged in the middle and is no longer suitable for my 8-month old, and Amazon reviewers described it as thin, flimsy and sinking under the weight of the baby.

The third theme is fit drift: as the cover softens, owners report a gap appearing at one end of the crib even though the mattress is nominally 52 x 27.5 in, which matters because a snug crib fit is a safety requirement.

Against that, there is a real cohort of long-term satisfied owners - one Amazon reviewer reported the same mattress slept in every night for almost 3 years and still going strong at age 2.5, another called it an incredible value for the money, and the waterproof vinyl has survived repeated scrubbing in a shower.

No independent lab durability testing was found for any Safety 1st mattress (searches of Consumer Reports, Wirecutter, BabyGearLab, Sleepopolis and Tuck returned nothing), and the Peaceful Lullabies at only 50 Walmart ratings has far too small a sample to judge.

The 10-year (Heavenly Dreams) and 15-year (Peaceful Lullabies) limited warranties are the manufacturer's own durability claim; note that the warranty excludes normal wear and tear, which is exactly what cover cracking and sagging would be argued as.

Sleep trials, returns, exchanges and fees

No sleep trial exists - Safety 1st crib mattresses were never sold with a home trial, unlike adult DTC mattress brands.

Direct from safety1st.com: a 30-day return policy from the date the original purchaser receives the item, with the item required to be in the same condition as received, unworn or unused, with tags and in its original packaging, plus a receipt or proof of purchase; a pre-paid shipping label is supplied for the return; original shipment charges are non-refundable; items sent back without first requesting a return are refused; and returns must be started through Consumer Care via the site chat or by calling 1-888-521-6550 Monday to Thursday 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM ET and Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM ET.

Purchases made from retail partners must be returned under that retailer's policy instead. At Walmart the live listing offered free 90-day returns. On Amazon the standard Amazon return window for the category applied.

No exchange programme, no restocking fee and no mattress-recycling fee were published anywhere. Important caveat: whatever the return window, the products are now out of stock or unavailable, so a return or exchange may end in a refund rather than a replacement.

Delivery, setup and old-mattress removal

Direct from Safety 1st there is no mattress delivery or removal service because the site no longer sells mattresses; its published shipping terms are free US shipping via UPS Ground or FedEx on orders of $50 and over, a $7.99 flat fee for orders under $50, no delivery to PO boxes, APO addresses, US territories or protectorates, no white-glove or in-home setup, and warehouses closed on New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr.

Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. At Walmart, the live Peaceful Lullabies listing offered free shipping and a Pro Haul Away Service with Mattress Haul Away priced at $0.00, meaning old-mattress removal was free of charge with the purchase, and the item was sold and shipped by Walmart.com with free 90-day returns.

On Amazon, standard Amazon delivery applied and there is no in-home setup. Realistically, a 5 in crib mattress weighing 7.5 lb (Heavenly Dreams) to 11.5 lb (Peaceful Lullabies) arrives compressed in a box and the parent drops it into the crib - there is no setup step, no foundation or box-spring requirement, and no recycling fee published.

What do the warranties cover?

Two mattress-specific warranties were documented, and neither appears on the official warranty page. Safety 1st Heavenly Dreams: 10-year limited warranty (Amazon product details list Manufacturer Warranty Description as 10 year limited, and the brand copy states the mattress is assembled in Canada and comes with a 10-year limited warranty).

Safety 1st Peaceful Lullabies: 15-year limited warranty, stated in Walmart's key item features for item 19511840.

The official safety1st.com Warranty page is written by Dorel Juvenile Group, Inc. (DJG) and warrants products to the original retail purchaser, but the categories it lists are cabinet locks and latches, appliance locks, plug protectors, grooming kits, nail clippers, nasal aspirators and travel and home safety products at 90 days, and bassinets, bedrails, diaper pails, feeding boosters, high chairs, gates, monitors, play yards, strollers, bath, car seats, digital audio, humidifiers, thermometers, potty training and walkers at one year - mattresses are not listed at all, and the page directs buyers to consult the product manual to confirm the warranty for a specific model.

Shared terms: coverage is for defective materials or workmanship only; an original receipt is required; any shipping charges are the consumer's responsibility; DJG will at its option provide replacement parts or replace the product and reserves the right to substitute if the part or model is discontinued; misuse, abuse, alteration, use contrary to the manual and normal wear and tear are excluded; the defect determination is made by Dorel in its sole and absolute discretion; the warranty is non-transferable and applies only to the original purchaser; and implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose are limited to the duration of the express warranty.

Practical note: the exclusions are broad, the mattress is discontinued, and Dorel reserves the right to substitute, so in practice these warranties are of limited use now.

Safety 1st vs. other mattress brands

Positioning: Safety 1st competed at the value end of crib mattresses, below Sealy Baby, Serta, Graco, Delta Children, Newton and Naturepedic on both price and published specification depth, and it has now exited the category rather than moved up it.
