The 30-Second Verdict: Quick Summary

Joybed makes foam-free, latex-free natural innerspring mattresses by hand in Grand Rapids, MI. It claims a mattress-factory heritage back to 1889 and has sold the Joybed line direct since 2019. You get a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover, wool, a firm feel, a 120-night trial, a 10-year warranty and free US shipping, from $475. The catch is that joybed.com is parked and joybeds.com is listed for sale (September 2026), so brand continuity is uncertain.

Chapter 01

Is Joybed the best mattress for you?

Best if you want a firm, bouncy, foam-free and latex-free natural bed at a budget price, you sleep hot, you dislike chemical smells, or you want cotton and wool over coils (back and stomach sleepers fare best).

Not ideal if you want memory-foam contouring or strong pressure relief (Sleep Foundation scored pressure relief 5.5/10), you are a petite side sleeper, you need a Full or King in the cheapest LX, or you want a brand with clear long-term continuity - as of Sept 22, 2026 joybed.com is parked and joybeds.com is offered for sale, so trial, warranty and refund support depend on who is operating the store.

Chapter 02

Comfort and firmness: which mattress fits you

Why this matters to you: Feel names are the brand's words, not measurements. Use them to shortlist two or three beds, then let your body decide.

Brand FAQ guidance: back or stomach sleepers and firm-mattress fans should pick the LX Luxury Firm (4/10) or LXP Medium-Firm (5/10); side sleepers and anyone wanting a more conforming feel should pick the LXP Medium-Plush (7/10) or the LXC Medium-Plush bundle with the Dreamin' Vegan topper (7/10); hot sleepers suit any model because there is no foam and the cotton and wool breathe; couples and edge users get a double column of edge coils; heavier sleepers get the best support from the LX.

Third-party guidance: Sleep Foundation rates the LX for stomach sleepers 7-8/10 and side sleepers down to 5.5/10, with back sleepers around 7/10; Sleep Advisor recommends the LX for eco shoppers, edge support and warm sleepers but not for light sleepers (motion transfer) or petite side sleepers, and Mattress Nerd steers side sleepers to the LXP Medium-Firm, back sleepers to the LX and stomach sleepers to the LXC Medium-Firm.

Which Joybed feel fits you?

Weight chart not yet researched

Weight and sleep position can change how a bed feels. We have not yet checked whether Joybed publishes a fit chart by body weight, so use a trial, where one is offered, to test the bed the way you sleep at home.

Four alignment checkpoints against a neutral posture line Neck Shoulders Lower back Hips level with spine sink in, no pinch no gap below no sag Straight spine line
  1. Neck: on your side, your nose should line up with the middle of your chest, not tip up or down.
  2. Shoulders: your bottom shoulder should sink in. Tingling or a numb arm means the bed is too firm for you.
  3. Lower back: on your back, slide a flat hand under your waist. A big gap means too firm; no room at all can mean too soft.
  4. Hips: ask someone to look from the side. Hips lower than shoulders means the bed is too soft for you.
Figure 2.1: Four checks to run in a store, lying still in the position you sleep in most. The store test in chapter 11 says how long to lie on each bed.

Compare the mattresses

Why this matters to you: Models from one brand can differ in feel, height and layers. Match the feel label and height to how you sleep before you compare prices.

Joybed lists 5 models. Feel names are the brand's labels.

LX Luxury Firm (10 in; live option prices $475 Twin, $600 Twin XL, $650 Queen, $900 Cal King; currently configurable in only these 4 sizes although the spec table lists Full and King; plant-fiber fire barrier, cotton, wool, cotton padding, pocketed coils with a double edge column; 850 coils in Queen; 98 lb Queen; firm 4/10 on the brand's own scale and 7-8/10 at Sleep Foundation; best for back and stomach sleepers).

LXC All-Cotton Medium (12 in; $790 Twin, $880 Twin XL, $890 Full, $1,090 Queen, $1,390 King and Cal King; two soft cotton layers plus firmer cotton padding, no wool, individually pocketed coils with double edge column; 789 Queen coils; medium-firm 5/10; the LXC Medium-Plush option is the same bed plus a 4 in Dreamin' Vegan cotton topper for a 7/10 feel).

Mattress prices and value

Why this matters to you: A starting price can rise with size, base and delivery. Get the full price for your size in writing before you choose.

Live option data read from joybeds.com product pages on Sept 22, 2026: LX $475-$900; LXC $790-$1,390; LXP $675-$1,490. The product pages advertise 'From $475' (LX) and 'From $675' (LXP), while the older comparison page still shows 'From $695' and 'From $990', and Sleep Foundation lists $495-$1,490 for the LX and $990-$1,990 for the LXP - treat exact pricing as stale or inconsistent.

Extras: Dreamin' Vegan topper $299-$369, wool pillow $129-$149, organic sheet set $89-$129, foundation $249-$349 (6 in and 9 in), bed frame $89, mattress protector $169-$199, Kids Bundle $813, Essentials bundle $1,222-$1,861, Premium bundle $1,338-$1,889, Sleep Cool bundle $547-$759. Financing: Synchrony retail-card offers (6/12/36/48/60 months, 29.99% variable APR noted as of 8/2/2026), Affirm 3/6/12-month plans and a 90-day lease-to-own option.

Value verdict: as of late 2026 this is the cheapest no-foam, no-latex natural coil mattress we could find in the US, with queen LX around $650 versus rival natural and latex queens at roughly $1,099-$2,499 in the brand's own chart, but the low price comes with one firm LX feel, a short size list and a thin top padding that some owners can feel coils through.

Chapter 05

How well do the mattresses hold up?

Why this matters to you: A mattress is a long buy. Lean on the written warranty and real owner reports to judge how it will last.

Sleep Foundation rates durability 7/10 and calls the lifespan impressive for the price; the brand argues cotton and wool hold their loft longer than foam and the LXP uses durable nano coils; the 10-year warranty signals confidence. Care requirements: a rigid supportive foundation or platform with slats no more than 5 in apart and center support on Queen and King, spot cleaning only, regular rotation (the bed cannot be flipped) and a protector.

Real-world risks seen in reviews: owners report feeling coils through the relatively thin top padding, mattresses arriving shorter or thinner than spec and taking weeks to months for the natural fibers to fluff to full height (height tolerance plus or minus 1 in, and coils can shift together up to 4 in in shipping), and one 1-star reviewer reported a 2020 plush model whose center collapsed after 2.5 years.

No independent durability lab data, and no fiberglass is mentioned anywhere in the material lists.

Sleep trials, returns, exchanges and fees

Why this matters to you: Feel is hard to judge in a store or in a week. Know your exit plan and its cost before you pay.

120-night in-home trial, with a mandatory 30-night minimum before you can exchange or return and a limit of one exchange or refund per household or address, exercised by calling 1-877-601-7035 by night 120.

Free exchange to a more comfortable model is offered; a refund is described in the FAQ and returns page as the purchase price less 10% and a $139 processing fee, with no restocking charge and no need to re-box or ship the mattress back - the mattress must be donated to a local organized charity (Joybed helps find one, and if no charity is available they ask you to mail in the law tag) and must be in donation-suitable condition with no damage, stains, tears, excessive odors or soiling.

Exclusions: financing fees already paid are not refunded; extra paid delivery fees are non-refundable; refunds apply only to US deliveries excluding Alaska and Hawaii; foundations are refundable only when bought with a mattress; the one-per-household limit applies.

Linens and accessories (Dreamin' Vegan topper, blanket and throw, wool topper, mattress protector and pad, organic sheet set, wool pillow) carry their own 120-night in-home trial with free returns to a charity. Conflicting third-party fee descriptions exist (Mattress Nerd: $139 processing fee only; BedtimeReviews: $139 plus up to $250 restocking; some on-site copy says a full refund), so get the fee confirmed in writing before ordering.

Chapter 07

Delivery, setup and old-mattress removal

Why this matters to you: Delivery terms decide your first week with the bed. Confirm the date, setup and old-bed removal before you pay.

Free shipping by UPS or similar to the lower 48 states; mattresses leave the warehouse in 1-2 business days and typically reach the front door in 3-5 business days; Alaska and Hawaii customers must call for a quote and are excluded from refunds.

Mattresses arrive compressed and rolled in a box (Twin/Twin XL box 16x16x41 in, Queen 17x17x65 in) - you move it in, unbox, unroll, break the shrink wrap and it expands to about 90% within minutes, with full height taking days to weeks (shake the corners if coils shift and the bed measures short).

Optional in-cart upgrades: White Glove Delivery for $250 (carrier brings it in and sets it up) or White Glove Delivery with Removal for $250 (also hauls away the old mattress); the FAQ says these take 3-4 weeks, while bundle cart labels show front door and white glove at 2-3 weeks. Front-door delivery does not require you to be home. California orders state compliance with state mattress-removal rules.

Terms require inspecting immediately and reporting any damage within 1 day of delivery, and refusing an order without notifying Joybed can trigger round-trip shipping plus a 25% restocking fee.

Typical wait: 1 to 2 business days

What do the warranties cover?

Why this matters to you: A warranty is only as good as its terms. Read the written terms and use a supported base, because the wrong frame can end coverage.

10-year limited warranty that continues from the original purchase date even after a repair or replacement, available to the original purchaser who bought from an authorized seller in the 50 United States (claims outside the 50 US are excluded). Covered: manufacturer defects in materials or workmanship, and body indentations of 1.5 in or greater.

Not covered: mattress fabric, impressions of 1.5 in or less, firmness preference, bed height, length or width, stains, soilage or burns, bent border wires, inadequate support from a weak foundation or improper frame (Queen and King need rigid center support, and any frame without a metal center support needs at least five 1x4 hardwood slats), transportation or removal costs, and soiled or stained defective products that cannot be safely inspected.

You must keep the white law label and trade labels, provide a receipt or other proof of date, place and purchase price, and follow the care and foundation instructions; Joybed will repair or replace at its option within a reasonable time and may substitute comparable materials or models, with no consequential damages or monetary refunds. Service is arranged nationwide through 1-877-601-7035.

Warranty enforceability is worth verifying while the domain is listed for sale.

Customer reviews and complaints

Why this matters to you: Star ratings depend on who posts and where. Read the low-star reviews for patterns, not just the average.

Brand-hosted reviews on joybeds.com/reviews: 830 rated reviews with the latest dated Sept 2026 - 640 five-star, 100 four-star, 63 three-star, 17 two-star and 10 one-star, an average of roughly 4.6/5, but these are on-site and not independently verified.

Third-party: Sleep Advisor logs a 4.8/5 average customer rating; Mattress Nerd republishes 4.7-4.8/5 averages; Sleep Foundation's test team scores performance around 5.5-7/10, with the weakest marks for pressure relief (5.5/10) and motion isolation (6/10).

Trustpilot rates joybeds 3.3/5 from very few reviews (no review invitations sent); its one detailed review, 2 stars, describes bulging uncomfortable coils, a difficult charity-donation return process routed through us-mattress.com and the $139 fee, ending in a full refund.

Reddit r/Mattress threads ('Joybed Review - Buyer beware' and 'Joybed opinions?') complain about still sleeping hot, insufficient support and coils reaching the top with no padding. Repeat complaint themes: too firm even in the plush option, coils felt under the surface, dimensions arriving short, one-sided design, longer-than-promised delivery and price jumps on Twin XL and King.

Praise themes: no off-gassing, cooling, natural materials, easy boxed setup and value.

What are the mattresses made of?

Why this matters to you: Layer names say little without numbers. Ask what is inside your exact model, layer by layer.

Natural fibers over steel coils with no foam and no latex. Top-down: a plant-fiber fire barrier woven from potato and bean leaves and stems, with no chemical flame retardants; American cotton layers from a southern family-owned supplier; California and Oregon wool; individually pocketed coils (LX and LXC add a double edge column; the LXP adds a nano-coil transition layer, zoned coils and hand tufting) plus plant-based glue in the spring unit.

Covers are 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton - a brushed weave on the LXC and a jacquard weave on the LXP - and the brand stresses they are not blended with polyester. Sourcing: cotton Texas and Georgia; wool California and Oregon; plant fiber North Dakota and Idaho; recycled steel coils Indiana; Amish wood foundations Ohio; mattresses hand-built in Grand Rapids, MI.

The brand says mattresses are over 99% natural by weight and that the only synthetics are the coil wrap, bottom dust barrier and backing layers, described on product pages as less than.01% of the mattress by weight, with a 99.9% renewable-materials claim. Mattresses are one-sided and not flippable.

Where can you try and buy the mattresses?

Why this matters to you: Where you buy sets the price, the trial and who handles problems. Check the seller's terms, not just the brand's.

Primarily direct at joybeds.com (phone 877-601-7035; sales Mon-Fri 10-9, Sat 10-8, Sun 12-6 EST; customer service Mon-Fri 9-6, Sat 10-6 EST). The only published try-in-person option is in the brand FAQ: if you are in Michigan, the mattresses are on display in US-Mattress retail stores.

US-Mattress (us-mattress.com, a Michigan retailer) also sold Joybed online - Joybed collection and product URLs are indexed and a Trustpilot reviewer bought through us-mattress.com - but us-mattress.com could not be confirmed, so check before travelling.

No Amazon or Walmart Joybed listings were found on Sept 22, 2026 (Amazon's 'joybed mattress' search returns 36 unrelated products), and no showroom, factory address or email address is published; the site operator is Green Bed, LLC d/b/a Joybeds and the Joybeds trademarks are held by JJR IP Services, LLC.

Buying caution: joybed.com is parked and joybeds.com is offered for sale on the SerpNames marketplace with the original content preserved, so verify who is actually fulfilling and servicing orders.

Positioning: the cheapest no-foam, no-latex natural coil mattress we found - LX queen about $650 against the brand's own comparison chart showing rival queens around $1,099-$2,499, and against Sleep Foundation's comparison listings of Birch at $1,099-$1,799 and PlushBeds Botanical Bliss at $1,299-$3,098 versus the $495-$1,490 Joybed LX.

Joybed claims a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and Oregon Tilth wool certifications and UC Davis wool toxicology testing, and its comparison page argues latex needs chemical curing agents and that GOLS permits some harmful substances and fillers.

Against it: competitors publish deeper certification sets (GOTS wool, GOLS, Rainforest Alliance, CertiPUR-US, Integrity NZ), while Joybed states outright that its inner cotton and wool are not organic certified to keep prices down; the LX has one firm feel versus rivals' multiple firmness options; Sleep Foundation's 5.5/10 pressure-relief score is below the average hybrid; LX size coverage is only 4 sizes; and, unlike established rivals, the brand's domains are parked or for sale in Sept 2026.

Net: wins on price, breathability, no off-gassing and natural materials, loses on pressure relief, size and certification depth, and carries brand-continuity risk.

How we research and report

This page is an early draft built from our research sheet for Joybed. We read the brand's own pages and public listings, and we do not test mattresses ourselves. Fields marked "Not yet researched" are still being checked.

Research sequence: official site first - joybeds.com is the operating brand store; the URL originally given (joybed.com) is a parked domain with no store, and has had none from 2014 through 2025.

Then retail channels (US-Mattress store and online references, Amazon search, Walmart, eBay), then third-party expert reviews (Sleep Foundation's 2026 lab review, Sleep Advisor, Mattress Nerd, BedtimeReviews, Yawnder), then complaint sources (Trustpilot page, Reddit r/Mattress thread snippets via search indexes) alongside the brand's own 830-review page.

Every claim above comes from the brand's own or cited pages; model prices were read from the product pages on Sept 22, 2026 and older or conflicting figures are flagged rather than blended.

Certification claims were cross-checked: GOTS organic cotton cover, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and Oregon Tilth wool claims are asserted by the brand and repeated by Sleep Foundation, Sleep Advisor, Mattress Nerd and the brand's own comparison chart, but no certificate or licence numbers are published and we could not find a Joybed or Green Bed entry in the certification databases, so they remain brand claims rather than independently verified facts.

Items nobody publishes are marked 'Not published as of Sept 2026'.

Is Joybed still operating?

It's unclear as of Sept 22, 2026. The site joybed.com is a parked page, and joybeds.com shows a SerpNames Domain for sale notice while the product pages still load. Confirm the seller, order fulfilment and warranty support before you buy.

Are the mattresses organic?

Only the cover is claimed to be GOTS-certified organic cotton. The FAQ says the inner cotton and wool are intentionally not organic certified. The wool is claimed to hold OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and Oregon Tilth certifications plus UC Davis toxicology testing. The brand doesn't publish certificate numbers (checked September 2026).

Is there any foam, latex or fiberglass?

There's no foam or latex in any model, and no fiberglass is mentioned anywhere. The only man-made content is the pocketed-coil wrap, dust barrier and backing, which the brand puts at less than .01% of mattress weight, plus plant-based glue.

What do they cost?

LX is $475 to $900, LXC $790 to $1,390 and LXP $675 to $1,490. Bundles start at $547 and accessories at $89. Synchrony, Affirm and lease-to-own financing are offered.

What sizes can I get?

The LXC and LXP come in Twin through Cal King. The LX currently sells only in Twin, Twin XL, Queen and Cal King, and the advertised LXE page is dead.

What about the trial, returns and warranty?

You get a 120-night trial with a 30-night minimum, one per household. You get a free exchange, or a refund less 10% and a $139 fee after charity donation. A 10-year limited warranty covers defects and indentations of 1.5 in or more.
