The 30-Second Verdict: Quick Summary

Otis Bed is a family-owned Buffalo, New York futon maker, founded in 1882. It sells cottonless futon mattresses in foam, memory foam and one innerspring, mostly through dealers. Street prices for a full or queen run about $460 to $720. You get true 8-inch tufted builds and a 10-year limited warranty on retail listings. The brand doesn't publish a sleep trial. It's a good match if you want a firm futon or platform-bed mattress. It's a weaker match if you're a side sleeper who wants plush, or if you need a trial or white-glove delivery.

Chapter 01

Is Otis Bed the best mattress for you?

Good fit: futon sofa/sleeper owners who want a firm, dense, cotton-free mattress that resists the flattening and dust of traditional cotton futons; platform-bed owners who want an extra-firm slab (Haley 150, Gemini, Galaxy); back and stomach sleepers; guest rooms, dorms, cabins, RVs and second homes; institutional and medical buyers (Otis says it supplies universities, government, military, the US Coast Guard, prisons, hospitals and nursing homes); shoppers who value a 1882-founded, three-generation family firm and a claimed handmade-in-the-USA product where each craftsman signs the mattress; budget-conscious buyers who still want a true 8-inch tufted build and a 10-year limited warranty.

Poor fit: side sleepers who need plush contouring - reviewers repeatedly call the firm models too firm, and one Amazon 2-star says 'It looks soft and plush but its super firm'; anyone who wants a soft futon out of the box; shoppers who consider an in-home sleep trial, free returns, exchanges, white-glove setup or old-mattress removal essential (none are published by the brand); people who want to buy on the brand site, since otisbed.com has no cart and no showroom or public dealer list; buyers who need published per-model warranty documents and claim procedures from the official site, because no warranty page exists there; people who want natural or organic materials - the line is polyurethane foam, polyester batting and polyester ticking with an FR rayon wrap, with no certification published; and very light/small-space buyers who want a thin cot futon, since the smallest profile is a true 6-inch Stratosphere.

Family-owned Buffalo, New York futon maker since 1882 selling 13 cottonless futon mattresses (foam, memory foam and one innerspring) at roughly $460-$720 full/queen street prices, mostly via dealers rather than direct. True 8-inch tufted builds, a 10-year limited warranty on retail listings and no published sleep trial. Best for firm futon and platform-bed sleepers; weak for side sleepers wanting plushness and for shoppers who need trials or white-glove delivery.

Chapter 02

Comfort and firmness: which mattress fits you

Why this matters to you: Feel names are the brand's words, not measurements. Use them to shortlist two or three beds, then let your body decide.

Back and stomach sleepers should start with the firm end of the line - Haley 110 (Luxurious Firm), Haley 150 (extra-firm, platform only), Gemini (latex-like but firm), Galaxy (firm innerspring) or the Mercury, Phoenix and Liberty multi-foam models.

Side sleepers are the hardest match: the softest published feels are Moonshadow (elite plush soft), Stratosphere (Medium-Soft, true 6 inches), the soft side of the flip-design Luxury and the 12-inch Pulsar, whose memory-foam top is the most contouring option in the lineup, though Amazon reviewers warn even the 'plush' models read as firm, so plan on a topper if you sleep on your side.

Couples wanting motion isolation should look at Pulsar (the page claims no transfer of motion) and Gemini's 4 lb convoluted foam; Galaxy's Bonnell coils will feel bouncier and transfer more movement.

Heavier sleepers are best served by the densest, thickest builds - Gemini (60 lb full, 4 lb foam) and Galaxy or Haley 150 (60 lb full, extra-firm, no-bottom-out claims) - while the 35 lb Stratosphere and 40 lb Haley 90/Luxury are the easiest to move and best for light users and occasional guest beds.

Sofa-first households should choose the dual-use models (Moonshadow, Luxury, Haley 90 or Haley 110) and add Grip Strips; Haley 150 is flat-platform-only and must not be used on a futon sofa or lounger. Platform-bed owners can use any model, and dorm, cabin, RV and cot buyers should look at the wide size menu on the Luxury and the cheap Stratosphere.

Hot sleepers should note there is no cooling gel, ventilated latex or phase-change material anywhere in the line - these are solid polyurethane foam and polyester futons with an FR rayon wrap; Otis instead markets a cottonless, dust-free build that it says suits people avoiding cotton dust, and Pulsar's Bioguard top resists mildew and mold. No per-model weight limits are published; full-size mattresses run 35 lb to 60 lb.

Which Otis Bed feel fits you?

Weight chart not yet researched

Weight and sleep position can change how a bed feels. We have not yet checked whether Otis Bed publishes a fit chart by body weight, so use a trial, where one is offered, to test the bed the way you sleep at home.

Four alignment checkpoints against a neutral posture line Neck Shoulders Lower back Hips level with spine sink in, no pinch no gap below no sag Straight spine line
  1. Neck: on your side, your nose should line up with the middle of your chest, not tip up or down.
  2. Shoulders: your bottom shoulder should sink in. Tingling or a numb arm means the bed is too firm for you.
  3. Lower back: on your back, slide a flat hand under your waist. A big gap means too firm; no room at all can mean too soft.
  4. Hips: ask someone to look from the side. Hips lower than shoulders means the bed is too soft for you.
Figure 2.1: Four checks to run in a store, lying still in the position you sleep in most. The store test in chapter 11 says how long to lie on each bed.

Compare the mattresses

Why this matters to you: Models from one brand can differ in feel, height and layers. Match the feel label and height to how you sleep before you compare prices.

Otis Bed lists 12 models. Feel names are the brand's labels.

Model-by-model mini reviews (otisbed.com publishes no prices; street prices below are Amazon listings sold and shipped by Futonland, checked Sept 22, 2026).

STRATOSPHERE - HD Foam Low Profile (6-inch border) high performance; the entry model and least expensive in the line; cottonless, pressurized construction with high-density convoluted foam, sheet foam and a 7-inch layer of 2.0 lb foam; polyester ticking, FR rayon wrap, machine tufting, taped edges, boxed corners, compression lace tufting; a true 6 inches built from about 10 inches of overstuffed goods and described as feeling like an 8; soft but supportive and listed Medium-Soft on Amazon; 35 lb full; 10-year durability claim; needs Grip Strips and a 6-inch box overcover; Amazon full $459.99, 4.0/5 from 11 ratings with 21 percent 1-star, and a queen 'Supportive Soft' at $579.99, 5.0/5 from 1 rating.

MERCURY - multi HD foam medium profile (7-inch) high performance; cover is 100 percent polyester chosen to hold tufting while staying flexible; a 10-inch blend of high performance foam at 2.0 lb and 2.5 lb density; FR rayon wrap; machine tufting (which the page says reduces thickness to lock in life) and tape-edge closing; sizes including King ship UPS or FedEx; no finished thickness, firmness, price or warranty published.

MOONSHADOW - HD foam high profile (8-inch) high performance; flagged #1 BEST SELLER and described as the dealers' most popular model; elite plush soft comfort that is still supportive; 10 inches of high quality 2.0 lb density foam, FR rayon wrap, machine tufting, tape edge closure and compression lace tufting; overstuffed with about 14 inches of resilient foam and fiber and finished as a true 8 inches; 45 lb full; mid-range price; 10-12+ years claimed; pairs with Grip Strips and an 8-inch box overcover; aimed at both sofa and sleeper duty.

HALEY 90 - HD foam high profile (8-inch); the softer, denser sibling of the Haley 110 and #8 on the brand's popularity charts; dense yet soft feel; 9 inches of 2.0 lb density foam, FR rayon wrap and polyester, machine tufting, tape edge closing, compression lace tufting, bench built with box edges; true 8 inches from about 14 inches of overstuffed goods; 40 lb full (Amazon shows 45 lb); mid-range; 10-12+ years; Amazon full $515.99, 5.0/5 from 4 ratings, queen $629.99 with no rating shown.

HALEY 110 - HD foam high profile (8-inch); #2 on the charts and the line's volume model; 'Luxurious Firm' feel pitched as neither too soft nor too firm; 7.5 oz twill fabric, 9 inches of at least 2.0 lb density foam, double polyester layers top and bottom, machine tufting and tape-edge closing; true 8 inches from 14 inches of overstuffed material; the page claims it resists change in support after many years of use, guaranteed; 40 lb full on the site and 45 lb on Amazon; mid-range; Amazon full $521.99, 4.3/5 from 58 ratings (69 percent 5-star, 7 percent 1-star, Amazon's Choice) and queen $629.99, 3.8/5 from 16 ratings (56 percent 5-star, 15 percent 1-star).

HALEY 150 - HD foam high profile (8-inch); the extra-firm, highly supportive 'platform bed only' model and #1 among buyers wanting an extra-firm futon platform mattress; 9 inches of high performance 2.0 lb foam plus a 1.5-inch thermal-bonded polyester wrap compressed into an 8-inch case (the listing describes 14 inches of HD foam and polyfiber compressed into an 8-inch case); machine tufting, tape edge closing, bench built, box edges, compression lace tufting; true 8 inches; 60 lb full; mid-range; 10-12+ years; Grip Strips are unnecessary because it does not fold; explicitly 'not intended for use on futon sofas or loungers'; Amazon full $719.99 and queen $656.99, 4.3/5 from 41 ratings.

LUXURY - foam and polyester; the brand's original cotton-less futon and the cheapest 8-inch model; flip design with a soft side and a medium-firm side (tape edge up for the firmer feel); site lists four layers of 1-inch minimum 2.0 lb high density foam plus dense polyester layers on the top side and an FR rayon wrap; the Amazon listing describes 6 inches of convoluted 2 lb high density foam topped with 5 inches of polyester fiber batting; true 8 inches from about 14 inches of overstuffing; 40 lb full; mid-range; 10-12+ years; the widest size menu in the line, including twin, full, queen, king, cot, chair, ottoman, twin split, twin ottoman, loveseat and love ottoman; Amazon full $459.99, 4.7/5 from 19 ratings (80 percent 5-star) and queen $579.99, 3.8/5 from 14 ratings.

GEMINI - multi HD foam high profile (8-inch); the ultra-premium 'Latex-Like' futon cushioning system billed as the gem of the line; 6 inches of convoluted 4 lb density foam - the highest density published anywhere in the lineup - inside 10 inches of superior quality foams, blending Atomic soft foam cushioning with egg-crate-cut Neutron high support foam; true 8 inches from 16 inches of goods compressed into an 8-inch border; 60 lb full; premium prices; 10+ years; boxed corners, bench built and pressurized.

PHOENIX - multi HD foam high profile (8-inch); 100 percent polyester fabric, a 10-inch blend of high performance foam at 2.0 lb and 2.5 lb density, FR rayon wrap, machine tufting and tape edge closing; the page stresses superior cushioning and shape retention for years; no finished thickness, firmness, weight or price published.

LIBERTY - multi HD foam high profile (8-inch); 9 inches of high performance foam built as two layers of 2.0 lb plus four layers of 2.5 lb density, FR rayon wrap and polyester, machine tufting and tape edge closing; all sizes including King ship UPS or FedEx; no firmness, weight or price published.

GALAXY - innerspring high profile (8-inch), the only coil model; a Bonnell coil spring unit set into 2 lb foam and overfilled with springy foam, fiber and coils; 100 percent polyester cover, FR rayon wrap, machine tufting, tape edge closure, compression lace tufting and box edges; true 8 inches from 14 inches of compressed goods; lively, strong and firm with a no-bottom-out claim; 10-15 years of daily use; 60 lb full; mid-high price bracket.

PULSAR - memory foam; the line's only memory-foam model; a 3-inch layer of viscoelastic thermal foam (3.0 HDV, also called Body Sensoring Viscoelastic VHD Memory Foam) sits just under a soft, strong Burlington top panel treated with Bioguard to resist microbes, fungi, mildew, bacteria and mold, over a fully polyester bottom panel and side border, an FR rayon wrap, tape edge finishing and the Otis Comfort Lock Cushioning System; the Comfort Lock system tensions all 12 inches of material for a 12-inch profile; pressure-management claims of conforming support with no transfer of motion and a firm base so you will not bottom out; non-flip, with the white Burlington face always up; King and other sizes ship UPS or FedEx; no weight, dimensions or price published.

QUASAR - appears only on the futon mattress index under 'Visco-Elastic (Memory) Multi HD Foam' listed as 'body only'; the brand has no public product page for it, so no materials, thickness, firmness or price could be verified.

GRIP STRIPS - an accessory rather than a mattress: a two-piece friction system whose lower face grips the frame slats and foam upper face holds the futon fabric; Otis calls them the best grippers on the market and recommends one pair per futon, one on the seat deck and one on the back deck (seat deck only if you buy a single strip); price not published.

Standard size language: the site says all sizes, including King, ship UPS or FedEx, and one Amazon listing shows twin, full, queen, king, cot, chair, ottoman, twin split, twin ottoman, loveseat and love ottoman configurations.

Chapter 04

Prices checked Sept 22, 2026 · recheck before buying

Mattress prices and value

Why this matters to you: A starting price can rise with size, base and delivery. Get the full price for your size in writing before you choose.

Otis Bed publishes no prices on otisbed.com - there is no cart, no price list and no sale pricing - so cost depends on the dealer. The site's own tiers in copy are: Stratosphere = least expensive introductory model; Moonshadow, Haley 90, Haley 110, Haley 150 and Luxury = mid-range; Galaxy = mid-high price bracket; Gemini = premium prices; and Mercury, Phoenix, Liberty, Pulsar and Quasar have no price language at all.

Verified street prices from Amazon listings sold and shipped by Futonland on Sept 22, 2026: Luxury full $459.99 and queen $579.99; Stratosphere full $459.99 and a queen 6-inch at $579.99; Haley 90 full $515.99 and queen $629.99; Haley 110 full $521.99 and queen $629.99; Haley 150 full $719.99 and queen $656.99.

That puts the realistic band for a real 8-inch futon at roughly $460-$720 for full or queen, with the widest size menu (twin through king plus cot, chair and ottoman sizes) on the Luxury, and no publicly listed price for a Stratosphere king or for the Mercury, Phoenix, Liberty, Gemini, Galaxy, Pulsar and Quasar models.

Value read: a true 8-inch compressed, tufted build, US manufacturing and a 10-year limited warranty against manufacturers defects on retail listings is competitive with imported cotton futons that typically sell for less but flatten faster, and it undercuts eco wool and latex futons - for comparison, The Futon Shop, which does not carry Otis, advertises its own Teddy Natural Wool futon mattress around $616-$1,120 and EcoSupport Pure Latex futon mattress around $770-$1,400 (sale versus list) as of Sept 22, 2026.

Against mainstream bed-in-a-box queens in the same $600-$800 range, Otis is shorter on perks: no brand sleep trial, no free return pickup, no cooling or organic story, and a warranty that is defect-only.

Amazon buyers generally rate the price fair (Value: 7 mentions, 6 positive on the Haley 110) with quibbles such as 'If the price was a bit less, I'd give it another star' and one Haley 150 owner calling it 'a good, firm mattress, just cheaper materials'. Optional paid protection is available on Amazon: $109.99 for a 3-year Asurion furniture plan or $16.99 per month for Complete Protect.

Chapter 05

How well do the mattresses hold up?

Why this matters to you: A mattress is a long buy. Lean on the written warranty and real owner reports to judge how it will last.

Durability is claimed, not independently tested.

Brand copy states 10 years (Stratosphere), 10-12+ years (Moonshadow, Haley 90, Haley 110, Haley 150, Luxury), 10+ years (Gemini) and 10-15 years (Galaxy), with the Haley 110 page claiming the foam 'resists change in support after many years of use; guaranteed!' The mattresses are compression-packed and the brand says the pack survives over 30,000 pounds of pressure and springs back to the designed comfort, which also keeps edges and center uniform; structure lifelines or borders are said to hold shape when sitting on the edge.

The only confirmed warranty term is the Amazon listing language '10 Year Limited Warranty against manufacturers defects' on the Luxury, Stratosphere and Haley 150 listings, while the Haley 110 and Haley 90 listings link to warranty information without publishing a term, and otisbed.com has no warranty page or FAQ at all; the site only says warranty concerns are non-existent because of the compression-packed pledge.

No independent durability testing exists that we could find: no Consumer Reports, RTINGS or Sleep Foundation test results for Otis, no published sag or indentation threshold, and no stated foam-density tolerances beyond the 1.8-2.5 lb HR range and Gemini's 4 lb layer.

Real-world signals are mixed but mostly long-term: an Amazon Haley 90 reviewer reports sleeping on one for over 17 years and replacing a prior one after 15 years, and a Haley 110 owner says it is still good after years of monthly flipping with no flat spots after four months of use, while a 1-star Haley 110 reviewer reports divots and permanent one-sided sinking, and a Haley 150 buyer noticed strained stitching around the tuft holes, which the manufacturer reportedly told them is normal because Otis packs 12-15 inches of foam, polyester and rayon into the case.

Practical care read: these are one-sided or dual-comfort slabs, so follow the model's flip guidance (Luxury is designed to flip between soft and medium-firm; most others rotate rather than flip), use the recommended Grip Strips and box overcover to protect the ticking, and keep the law label for any claim.

Chapter 06

Sleep trials, returns, exchanges and fees

Why this matters to you: Feel is hard to judge in a store or in a week. Know your exit plan and its cost before you pay.

Otis Bed publishes no sleep trial, return, exchange or restocking-fee policy: there is no returns page, no FAQ and no terms page on otisbed.com, and the Why Buy page only claims high satisfaction and 'lowest product return in the industry' without terms.

All consumer-facing return mechanics therefore come from the retail channel, and the Amazon listings fulfilled by Futonland show a 30-day refund or replacement window with return shipping fees that may apply on the Haley 110, Haley 90, Luxury and Stratosphere listings; the Haley 150 full listing additionally displays a 90-day refund or replacement option, and every listing offers optional paid protection ($109.99 for a 3-year Asurion plan or $16.99 per month for Complete Protect).

We found no brand-run home trial, no free return pickup, no comfort-guarantee exchange into a different firmness, no restocking percentage published by Otis, and no published trial at dealers. If you buy in a physical store, the store's own return window and fees govern the transaction, and any dealer markup or delivery charge is between you and that dealer.

Because the only long warranty found is defect-based, a change-of-mind return after the Amazon window would leave you reselling the mattress yourself, so confirm the return terms in writing before ordering and break in the futon for a few weeks before judging firmness - several reviewers found the feel improved after the initial compression expanded fully.

Chapter 07

Delivery, setup and old-mattress removal

Why this matters to you: Delivery terms decide your first week with the bed. Confirm the date, setup and old-bed removal before you pay.

Every Otis futon ships compression-packed: the brand says the pack withstands over 30,000 pounds of pressure, compresses down small for compact storage, and that all products are UPS-able anywhere in the world, with all sizes including King shipping by UPS or FedEx. In practice the mattresses arrive as a heavy boxed slab that you open and let expand to its designed comfort.

Amazon listings handled by Futonland showed free delivery and in-stock shipping for the full and queen models we checked on Sept 22, 2026. What is not published anywhere: white-glove delivery, in-home setup or assembly, stair or room-of-choice carry, old-mattress removal, haul-away or recycling, delivery lead times, freight surcharges, or any appointment windows.

The official site says nothing about setup or removal, and no third-party listing mentioned it either, so plan on unboxing and positioning the mattress yourself with help - weights run from 35 lb for a full Stratosphere to 60 lb for a full Gemini, Galaxy or Haley 150.

Foundation and frame requirements: the mattresses are designed for bi-fold futon frames or platform-bed style frames on a slatted or solid base; Otis Grip Strips are recommended for bi-fold frames because the smooth polyester ticking slides (one pair, with one strip at the frame edge over the seat slats and one toward the top edge of the back slats; seat deck only if using a single strip), and each model is paired with a 6-inch or 8-inch box overcover to protect the fabric.

The Haley 150 is flat-only and must not be used on a futon sofa or lounger, and no model publishes a slat-gap or center-support specification.

What do the warranties cover?

Why this matters to you: A warranty is only as good as its terms. Read the written terms and use a supported base, because the wrong frame can end coverage.

The only warranty language we could verify is the Amazon listing statement '10 Year Limited Warranty against manufacturers defects', shown on the Otis Luxury, Stratosphere and Haley 150 listings; the Haley 110 and Haley 90 listings link out to warranty information without publishing a duration, and no warranty document is hosted on otisbed.com.

The official site's only relevant text is that warranty concerns are effectively 'non-existent' because the products are compression-packed and expand to designed comfort, plus the Haley 110 claim that the foam 'resists change in support after many years of use; guaranteed!' - marketing language rather than a policy.

Because no formal warranty page, PDF or registration process is published, the following are all unstated as of Sept 22, 2026: eligibility (original purchaser, authorized-dealer purchase, proof of purchase), coverage length per model, whether it is prorated, indentation or sag thresholds, foam-density and edge-support exclusions, coverage of the cover, zipper, tufting or stitching, exclusions for comfort preference, normal softening, stains, burns, soiling, improper foundations or frames, transportation and inspection costs on claims, whether the remedy is repair, replacement or refund, and how to file a claim.

Practical guidance: assume a 10-year defect-only warranty against manufacturing defects on the models where it is stated, keep the law label and receipt, use the recommended frame and Grip Strips, and ask the dealer for the written warranty card and claim phone number before you buy, because the brand's public materials do not provide them.

Customer reviews and complaints

Why this matters to you: Star ratings depend on who posts and where. Read the low-star reviews for patterns, not just the average.

No reviews or ratings are published on otisbed.com, and there is no brand-store review widget.

Third-party signals are concentrated on Amazon, where the Otis futon mattresses are sold and shipped by Futonland: as of Sept 22, 2026, Haley 110 full holds 4.3/5 from 58 ratings (69 percent 5-star, 14 percent 4-star, 3 percent 3-star, 7 percent 2-star, 7 percent 1-star; Amazon's Choice), Haley 110 queen 3.8/5 from 16 ratings (56 percent 5-star, 15 percent 1-star), Luxury full 4.7/5 from 19 ratings (80 percent 5-star, 13 percent 4-star, 7 percent 3-star), Luxury queen 3.8/5 from 14 ratings, Haley 150 queen 4.3/5 from 41 ratings, Haley 150 full 4.7/5 from 20 ratings with no 1-star or 2-star, Haley 90 full 5.0/5 from 4 ratings, Stratosphere full 4.0/5 from 11 ratings with a 21 percent 1-star share, and Stratosphere queen 5.0/5 from 1 rating.

Praise themes: real support that is still comfortable for sitting and sleeping ('200% satisfied', 'JUST RIGHT'), true stated thickness with no divots after months of use, no noticeable offgassing, easy handling because a full Stratosphere is only about 35 lb, and long service life on the Haley 90.

Complaint themes and the root cause: (1) firmness versus expectations - a 2-star Haley 110 buyer says 'It looks soft and plush but its super firm' and it hurt their hip side-sleeping, and a 4-star buyer says it is firm enough to sit on but too firm to sleep on and wished for 1-2 inches of memory foam; this is inherent to a dense tufted foam futon marketed to firmness-loving shoppers; (2) foldability - the Haley 110 review breakdown shows foldability mentioned 5 times, all negative, because a true 8-inch tufted slab 'does not bend easily in the couch position' and 'doesn't like to hold its fold', and a queen Haley 110 owner says it is 'too thick to actually set up the futon as a couch'; (3) sliding on the frame - multiple reviewers say Grip Strips and an oversized cover are effectively mandatory; (4) durability outliers - divots and permanent one-sided sinking on one Haley 110, strained tuft-hole stitching on one Haley 150 that the brand called normal; (5) packaging - a Stratosphere arrived in unmarked packaging rather than the clear box pictured; (6) value quibbles - 'If the price was a bit less, I'd give it another star' and 'a good, firm mattress, just cheaper materials'.

Outside Amazon we found almost nothing: SmartCustomer lists otisbed.com with 0 reviews and no rating, and BBB, Yelp and Trustpilot ratings are not published, so no BBB rating, complaint count or Yelp score was verifiable. The honest read is that Otis is a niche futon brand with a few hundred total marketplace ratings, high marks for firmness, thickness and longevity, and consistent friction wherever buyers expect a soft, easily folding futon.

Chapter 10

What are the mattresses made of?

Why this matters to you: Layer names say little without numbers. Ask what is inside your exact model, layer by layer.

Construction is uniform across the line: a cottonless, press-packed futon mattress built from high-resilience polyurethane foam, polyester fiber batting and 100 percent polyester covers, wrapped in a flame-retardant rayon layer, tufted and closed with tape edging.

The Haley 90 page states Otis uses HR foam at 1.8 lb per cubic foot or better, and the model pages list 2.0 lb and 2.5 lb density foam for Mercury, Phoenix, Liberty, Moonshadow, Haley 90, Haley 110, Haley 150, Luxury, Stratosphere and Galaxy, with Gemini adding 6 inches of convoluted 4 lb density foam plus Atomic soft foam and egg-crate Neutron high support foam.

Covers are cream polyester, 7.5 oz twill on the Haley 110, and a Burlington panel with Bioguard antimicrobial, antifungal and mildew-resistant treatment on the Pulsar top.

The Pulsar adds a 3-inch viscoelastic memory-foam layer (3.0 HDV, marketed as Body Sensoring Viscoelastic VHD) and a 12-inch Comfort Lock build; Galaxy adds a Bonnell coil unit encased in 2 lb foam; the Luxury is the dual-comfort flip model with a 2.0 lb foam base and dense polyester on the soft face.

Shared processes are machine tufting, compression lace tufting, tape-edge closing, boxed corners, bench-built assembly and the Otis Comfort Lock Cushioning System, which the brand says tensions overstuffed materials into a layered, pressurized bond; the Why Buy page also claims a fire-safe barrier, and no statement about fiberglass is published.

On labeling: the Amazon Luxury listing cites a flame-retardant rayon layer meeting 16 CFR Part 1633, and the brand claims handmade-in-the-USA construction where each craftsman signs the mattress. Not published anywhere: CertiPUR-US, GOTS, GOLS, OEKO-TEX, GREENGUARD or organic certifications, foam ILD/firmness numbers, component percentages, cutaway diagrams and any recycled or bio-based content claims.

The Quasar memory-foam model is listed on the index as 'body only' with no spec sheet reachable.

Where can you try and buy the mattresses?

Why this matters to you: Where you buy sets the price, the trial and who handles problems. Check the seller's terms, not just the brand's.

Otis Bed is a dealer-first brand. otisbed.com is brochure-only with no cart, no showroom address and no public dealer directory; to find a store you fill out the Dealer Locator form (name, address, city, state or province, country, postal code, phone, email, comments and a captcha) and the company responds with the nearest dealer.

The Contact Us page lists phone 716.825.2599, toll-free 800.588.OTIS (6847), fax 716.824.2073, info@otisbed.com and sales@otisbed.com, with orders@otisbed.com reserved for authorized dealers only.

No street address or factory address is published anywhere on the site; the brand describes itself as a privately held corporation located in Buffalo, New York, Western New York, a port city near Canada, and says it is Western New York's largest and most respected mattress manufacturer.

The only verified online retail channel is Amazon, where eight Otis futon SKUs (Luxury, Stratosphere, Haley 90, Haley 110 and Haley 150 in full and queen) are sold and shipped by Futonland, with Amazon's Choice badges on at least two listings. No other retailers were found carrying Otis as of Sept 22, 2026. The Futon Shop's own search returned no Otis products, indicating it does not carry the brand.

Otis also states it supplies universities, government, military, the US Coast Guard, prisons, hospitals, nursing homes, decorators and retailers nationwide, and that all products are UPS-able anywhere in the world, so institutional channels exist but are not consumer-facing. Sibling brands sharing the Buffalo factory: none published.

To try before you buy, the realistic route is to phone Otis or submit the locator form for a futon specialty dealer near you, or to order through Amazon and use the 30-day window if the feel is wrong, since no showroom or in-person trial program is published.

Chapter 12

Otis Bed vs. other mattress brands

Why this matters to you: A fair comparison needs the same facts for both beds. Line up price, trial and warranty for each one.

Versus traditional cotton futon mattresses: Otis positions itself as 'the original cottonless - dust free' futon and argues foam retains shape and feel where cotton compacts and sheds dust, which is why its futons weigh 35-60 lb and hold a true 6 or 8 inches; the trade-off is that cotton futons start softer and breathe more, and Amazon reviewers confirm the Otis feel is firm and dense rather than fluffy.

Versus eco wool and latex futon specialists: The Futon Shop, which does not carry Otis, advertises its own wool and latex futon mattresses at roughly $616-$1,400 on the day we checked, meaning natural-material futons cost about 1.3x to 3x the $459.99-$719.99 Otis full/queen street prices; those rivals publish organic and natural certifications Otis does not, but Otis wins on price, on a stated 10-year defect warranty and on true-thickness compressed builds.

Versus mainstream bed-in-a-box mattresses in the same $600-$800 range: those brands generally market 100-night-plus sleep trials, free returns and CertiPUR-US foam certification, none of which Otis publishes, so if you want a conventional bed with a risk-free trial and national delivery perks, Otis is the wrong category - Otis counters with a folding futon format, dealer service and 10-15 year durability claims.

Versus cheap imported futon mattresses sold on marketplaces: Otis's US-made, hand-tufted, signed-by-craftsman story, HR foam at 1.8 lb per cubic foot or better and a stated 10-year defect warranty are the differentiators, while imports typically cost less but publish no density or durability data - though Otis is distribution-limited, dealer-priced and has no published independent testing, so the quality premium is a judgment call rather than a verified one.

Versus its own lineup: the practical shortlist is Stratosphere (cheapest, 6-inch, softest), Luxury, Moonshadow and Haley 90/110 (mid-price 8-inch dual-use), Haley 150 (extra-firm platform only), Gemini (premium latex-like 4 lb foam), Galaxy (firm innerspring) and Pulsar (12-inch memory foam, best motion isolation).

Competitor details reflect published prices and specs on the date shown. Mattress brands may update prices and trial terms over time.

Who makes Otis Bed and where?

Otis Bed Manufacturing Co., a privately held family-owned company in Buffalo, New York, founded in 1882 when George Otis began hand-making mattress and boxspring sets delivered by horse and buggy; three generations later the founding family still owns it, and it calls itself Western New York's largest and most respected mattress manufacturer.

Does Otis sell regular mattresses or only futons?

The consumer website sells futon mattresses only - 13 models across foam, foam and polyester, innerspring and memory foam - while the company says it also builds high performance sleep and cushioning systems for the medical market and supplies universities, government, military, the US Coast Guard, prisons, hospitals and nursing homes.

How much do Otis futon mattresses cost?

Otis publishes no prices; Amazon listings sold by Futonland on Sept 22, 2026 ran Luxury full $459.99 and queen $579.99, Stratosphere full $459.99, Haley 90 full $515.99 and queen $629.99, Haley 110 full $521.99 and queen $629.99, and Haley 150 full $719.99 and queen $656.99, so budget roughly $460-$720 for a true 8-inch full or queen.

Is there a sleep trial or free return?

No brand trial is published; the retail channel shows a 30-day Amazon refund or replacement window (90 days on the Haley 150 full listing) with return shipping fees that may apply, and there is no exchange program or free pickup.

What does the warranty cover?

The verifiable term is a 10-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects, stated in the Amazon listings for Luxury, Stratosphere and Haley 150; otisbed.com publishes no warranty page, so get the written terms and claim process from your dealer.

Can I try one in a store, and who handles delivery and removal?

The brand doesn't publish a store list. Use the Dealer Locator form or call 800.588.OTIS (6847). Delivery is compressed UPS or FedEx shipping, and you unbox it yourself. White-glove setup and removal aren't offered.

Can I try one in a store, and who handles delivery and old-mattress removal?

No showroom, store list or public dealer directory is published, so use the Dealer Locator form or call 800.588.OTIS (6847) for the nearest dealer, or buy on Amazon from Futonland. Delivery is compressed UPS or FedEx shipping you unbox yourself; white-glove setup and old-mattress removal are not offered or published anywhere.
