The 30-Second Verdict: Quick Summary

MTJ American is an institutional mattress maker in Hudson, North Carolina. It's an LLC with over 15 years in business. It sells 21 made-to-order beds direct, from $69 to $293. The lines cover detention, behavioral health, college, military, camp and shelter use. They come in bunk and dorm sizes, not consumer queen or king sizes. You won't get a sleep trial or returns. Warranties cover seams only and run 1 to 5 years. If you're shopping for a home, this isn't your brand. If you buy for a facility, it's worth a look.

Chapter 01

Is MTJ American the best mattress for you?

Good fit: institutional buyers rather than households - county jails, state and federal prisons, behavioral and mental health units, university and college housing, summer camps and cabins, homeless and emergency shelters, group homes, military barracks and training facilities - who buy 25 in to 38 in wide by 75 in to 80 in long beds in volume or singly.

Procurement officers who need tamper-resistant, rip-proof, fluid-proof and easily searched mattresses to control contraband, self-harm and infection. Housekeeping and infection-control teams wanting single-piece vinyl or polyurethane-coated nylon covers that wipe clean and carry a fungistatic and antimicrobial treatment. Facilities facing bed bug, lice and bodily-fluid risk.

Camps wanting budget foam-core nylon or vinyl beds for children and cabins. Colleges wanting a reversible dual-density bed so one purchase covers both firm and soft preferences. Military buyers needing sub-30 lb reversible barracks beds.

Budget-restricted buyers who need usable beds from $69. Anyone wanting US-made North Carolina manufacturing, custom sizes, custom colors, rip-proof covers or a patented integrated full-size pillow built into the mattress. Poor fit: ordinary household shoppers - MTJ publishes no queen, king, full or twin XL residential sizes, no showroom network and no consumer sleep trial.

Anyone who wants to return or exchange a mattress, because every sale is final and there is no trial period. Shoppers who need a 10-year or lifetime warranty, since MTJ publishes only 1-year to 5-year warranties on seam bonding. Side sleepers, pressure-relief seekers and anyone wanting plush multi-layer foam, latex, gel or phase-change cooling comfort.

Couples wanting motion isolation or a shared queen or king. Anyone who must try a bed in a store first, or who needs same-week delivery, since production takes about two weeks. Buyers wanting white-glove setup or old-mattress haul-away, neither of which is offered.

Chapter 02

Comfort and firmness: which mattress fits you

Why this matters to you: Feel names are the brand's words, not measurements. Use them to shortlist two or three beds, then let your body decide.

MTJ sells no residential bed sizes, so sleeper guidance is about setting and body weight rather than back, side or stomach positions in a queen.

College and dorm: the Innerspring College Mattress 36x80x8 at $219 suits students who want a firm, supported dorm bed with a flexible encapsulated edge and no border rod digging into the back of the legs on the way out of bed; the Dual-Density Foam College Mattress from $222 suits students who prefer all-foam and want to flip the mattress to choose a firmer or softer face.

Back sleepers on institutional beds get the most support from the innerspring and the 8 in foam options, which MTJ positions as delivering better support than the 6 in mattresses most competitors sell.

Military and barracks: the InnerSpring Military 38x80x8 and Dual-Density Foam Military from $222 are both reversible and under 30 lb so a soldier can flip the bed between firm and supple without help; MTJ calls the encapsulated innerspring ideal for barracks, training facilities and colleges.

Camp and children: the sealed foam core camp beds in nylon or vinyl from $193 are the family-appropriate choice; MTJ recommends the softer nylon cover for older campers and cabins where vinyl feels too stiff, and the vinyl version for younger campers and higher fluid risk.

Detention: higher-risk inmates, contraband concerns or self-harm risk point to Secure Advantage from $121 or Secure Clear from $108, both with rip-proof covers and the strongest seams; agencies that must search beds quickly should take Clear Advantage from $108 or Secure Clear from $108 because the transparent cover allows a visual inspection.

Comfort-led correctional buyers who still need a searchable, sealed bed should look at Fusion Advantage from $127, which MTJ rates as the line's best comfort and support with a denser core.

Behavioral health: choose the Fusion Dual Density from $250 when you need one SKU that serves both firm and soft patient preferences thanks to the reversible dual-density core, or the Sealed Fusion from $250 for an all-foam single-density sealed bed; both carry 3-year seam warranties. The Sewn Dual-Density from $273 fits only low-contamination settings because sewn seams are not water-tight.

Shelters: the Waterproof Shelter from $121 suits crowded facilities and floor sleeping because it weighs under 20 lb, cannot be ripped apart by hand and carries a 3-year seam warranty, while the Value Safe Shelter from $96 is the cheaper shelter bed for lower-risk settings. Weight guidance: MTJ publishes no weight ratings at all.

Its cores are fiber or foam, and the firmest, most durable builds in the catalog are the polyfiber-core Secure Advantage and Waterproof Shelter mattresses with 60 lb per inch seams. Heavier adults should avoid the 4.5 in to 5 in compression-fiber detention and shelter beds and step up to the 8 in innerspring or 8 in dual-density foam models.

Anyone who needs a plush pressure-relieving surface, a pillow top or motion isolation for two adults in a queen or king is outside this catalog entirely.

Which MTJ American feel fits you?

Weight chart not yet researched

Weight and sleep position can change how a bed feels. We have not yet checked whether MTJ American publishes a fit chart by body weight, so use a trial, where one is offered, to test the bed the way you sleep at home.

Four alignment checkpoints against a neutral posture line Neck Shoulders Lower back Hips level with spine sink in, no pinch no gap below no sag Straight spine line
  1. Neck: on your side, your nose should line up with the middle of your chest, not tip up or down.
  2. Shoulders: your bottom shoulder should sink in. Tingling or a numb arm means the bed is too firm for you.
  3. Lower back: on your back, slide a flat hand under your waist. A big gap means too firm; no room at all can mean too soft.
  4. Hips: ask someone to look from the side. Hips lower than shoulders means the bed is too soft for you.
Figure 2.1: Four checks to run in a store, lying still in the position you sleep in most. The store test in chapter 11 says how long to lie on each bed.

Compare the mattresses

Why this matters to you: Models from one brand can differ in feel, height and layers. Match the feel label and height to how you sleep before you compare prices.

MTJ American lists 12 models. Feel names are the brand's labels.

MTJ American lists 21 mattress models, all made to order in Hudson, NC. Prices below are as of September 2026. DETENTION (7 models, sold in 25 in, 27 in and 30 in widths by 75 in long, 4.5 in thick, each with an optional built-in pillow for $2).

Econo Safe Detention Mattress, from $69, the cheapest bed MTJ sells: green durable vinyl over a polyfiber core 5 in compressed to 4.5 in, RF-welded bonded seams rated over 52 lb per inch with a 1-year seam warranty, fungistatic treated, but no breathable vent. Prices 25 in $69, 25 in with pillow $72, 27 in $73 and $75, 30 in $77 and $79.

Econo Clear Detention Mattress, from $75: identical build but with a transparent clear vinyl and polyester scrim cover so staff can visually search for contraband; 25 in $75 and $77, 27 in $79 and $81, 30 in $84 and $86; 1-year seam warranty.

Value Safe Detention Mattress, from $96: adds MTJ's patented breathable vent, which resists water, oil, urine, blood, head lice and bed bugs and makes tampering detectable, over a medium-density polyfiber core in a crack-resistant green vinyl with polyester scrim lining; 25 in $96 and $98, 27 in $102 and $104, 30 in $108 and $110; 52 lb per inch seams, 1-year seam warranty.

Clear Advantage Detention Mattress, from $108: clear vinyl for the easiest contraband searches plus a denser polyfiber core and the breathable vent, which makes punctures and incisions visible under pressure; 25 in $108 and $110, 27 in $113 and $115, 30 in $122 and $124; 52 lb per inch seams, 2-year seam warranty.

Secure Clear Detention Mattress, from $108: clear vinyl combined with a rip-stop scrim that cannot be torn apart by hand, transparent for searching, with RF-welded seams and no stitching to help block bed bugs; 25 in $108 and $110, 27 in $113 and $115, 30 in $122 and $124; 52 lb per inch seams, 2-year seam warranty.

Secure Advantage Detention Mattress, from $121: MTJ's most secure bed, aimed at inmates at risk of self-harm or who are destructive - tough yet soft vinyl that resists perforation and puncture and cannot be ripped into shreds by hand, a Max-Life polyfiber core, the strongest seams in the range at over 60 lb per inch reinforced with internal stitching, and a 6 in core option; 25 in $121 and $123, 27 in $127 and $129, 30 in $137 and $139; 3-year seam warranty.

Fusion Advantage Detention Mattress, from $127: the comfort pick of the detention line, pairing a pinhole-free thermal polyurethane-coated nylon cover that will not crack with a Max Life densified polyester fiber core that MTJ calls its best comfort and support, plus the breathable vent to reveal incisions; 25 in $127 and $129, 27 in $134 and $136, 30 in $141 and $143; 60 lb per inch seams, 3-year seam warranty.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH (4 models, all 36 x 80 in). Sealed Value Safe Behavioral Health Mattress 36X80, from $248: highly water-resistant green vinyl over a 100% US-CertiPur foam core, sealed single-piece cover with no stitching and RF-welded seams; 6 in $248, 8 in $273; 52 lb per inch seams, 1-year seam warranty.

Sealed Fusion Behavioral Health Mattress 36x80, from $250: thermal polyurethane-coated nylon cover that is pinhole-free and will not crack, over a high-density foam core, sealed; 5 in $250, 6 in $263, 7 in $270, 8 in $291; 60 lb per inch seams, 3-year seam warranty; the best-value sealed mental-health bed.

Fusion Dual Density Behavioral Health Mattress 36x80, from $250: the same sealed nylon cover and 60 lb per inch, 3-year seam warranty as the Sealed Fusion but with a dual-density core - firm high-density foam on one face, softer low-density foam on the other - so the mattress is reversible and a single SKU serves both firm and soft preferences; 5 in $250, 6 in $263, 7 in $270, 8 in $291.

Sewn Dual-Density Behavioral Health Mattress 36X80, from $273: the most expensive behavioral health model, using a honeycomb 210 denier cover that is soft to the touch and will not crack when bent, with sewn rather than bonded seams, so it breathes better but is not water-tight; MTJ states it should only be used where the risk of fluid contamination is minimal; dual-density reversible core; 6 in $273, 8 in $293; no seam warranty published for this model.

COLLEGE (3 models).

Border Rod Innerspring Mattress with Tape-Edge Nylon Cover 36x80x8, $200: steel coil innerspring with a steel border rod sandwiched between two polyester fiber layers and topped with medium-density CertiPUR-US foam, encased in a water-resistant laminated 210 denier blue nylon cover with a fire barrier and tape-edge sewn seams for a tight, firm feel; an inverted sewn seam cover option costs the same $200; passes Cal TB 129, 16 CFR 1632 and 1633.

Innerspring College Mattress 36x80x8, $219: encapsulated innerspring with firm foam rails instead of a border rod, so the edge flexes rather than bending, and dual-density CertiPUR-US foam above and below the coil unit for a reversible firm-or-supple bed; 210 denier fluid-proof coated nylon cover with a hexagonal rip-stop pattern rated 40% stronger tear strength than standard nylon, waterfall sides to reduce bed bug hiding places and inverted sewn seams; under 30 lb.

Dual-Density Foam College Mattress 36x80, from $222: two laminated layers of high-resiliency dual-density 100% CertiPUR-US polyurethane foam, reversible firm to supple, in the same 210 denier hexagonal coated nylon cover with waterfall sides and inverted sewn seams; 6 in $222, 8 in $239; under 30 lb. MILITARY (2 models).

InnerSpring Military Mattress 38x80x8, $219: the college encapsulated innerspring in a 38 x 80 x 8 in barracks size, with a firm yet flexible coil core between two high-density foam layers, reversible, foam side rails instead of a border rod, a 210 denier antimicrobial nylon cover with hexagonal rip-stop and waterfall design, under 30 lb, and custom sizes available.

Dual-Density Foam Military Mattress 36x80, from $222: the college dual-density foam bed in military trim - two foam layers in a fluid-proof 210 denier nylon cover, reversible firm or supple, under 30 lb, antimicrobial treated, hexagonal rip-stop cover; 6 in $222, 8 in $239. The Border Rod Innerspring 36x80x8 at $200 is tagged for Military, College and Camp alike. CAMP (2 models).

Sealed Foam Core Camp Mattress with Vinyl Cover, from $193: 100% CertiPUR-US polyurethane foam core in 6 in or 8 in under a durable green highly water-resistant vinyl with a polyester scrim lining that resists cracking, tear-resistant bonded seams over 52 lb per inch with a 1-year seam warranty, and MTJ's patented breathable vent against bed bugs, lice, water, oil and urine; 30x75x6 $193, 30x75x8 $200, 36x75x6 $205, 36x75x8 $214, 38x75x6 $219, 38x75x8 $229, 38x80x6 $241, 38x80x8 $251.

Sealed Foam Core Camp Mattress with Nylon Cover, from $199: the premium camp bed and the best seam warranty MTJ publishes at 5 years, using a high-density foam core in 6 in or 8 in under a pinhole-free thermal polyurethane-coated nylon cover that will not crack, with seam strength over 60 lb per inch; 30x75x6 $199, 30x75x8 $204, 36x75x6 $209, 36x75x8 $219, 38x75x6 $223, 38x75x8 $233, 38x80x6 $245, 38x80x8 $255; MTJ recommends nylon for older campers and where vinyl stiffness is a problem.

SHELTER (2 models). Value Safe Shelter Mattress, from $96: medium-density poly fiber core 5 in compressed to 4.5 in inside an easy-clean green vinyl with polyester scrim, with the patented breathable vent resisting water, oil, urine, blood, bed bugs and head lice; 25 in $96 and $98, 27 in $102 and $104, 30 in $108 and $110; 52 lb per inch bonded seams, 1-year seam warranty.

HEALTHCARE (1 model).

Home Advantage Healthcare Mattress: listed without a price or size options, sold as medical-grade features at residential pricing with a blue water-resistant nylon top over a waterproof vinyl bottom to keep out bodily fluids and bed bugs and a medium-density polyurethane foam core - MTJ has published no price, so treat this as quote-only., but no pillow or pad product exists in the online catalog and the store search returns none for either term.

Prices checked 22 September 2026 · recheck before buying

Mattress prices and value

Why this matters to you: A starting price can rise with size, base and delivery. Get the full price for your size in writing before you choose.

Prices as of September 2026 from MTJ's own product catalog: 21 mattresses from $69 to $293. The cheapest beds are the detention lines - Econo Safe $69 to $79, Econo Clear $75 to $86, Value Safe Detention $96 to $110, Clear Advantage $108 to $124, Secure Clear $108 to $124, Secure Advantage $121 to $139, Fusion Advantage $127 to $143. Behavioral health runs $248 to $293.

College and military run $200 to $239. Camp runs $193 to $255. Shelter runs $96 to $139.

Every price scales by width and thickness rather than by size name: a 25 in wide bed costs $69 to $127 depending on model, a 30 in wide bed costs $79 to $143, and adding MTJ's patented integrated full-size pillow costs $2 to $3. A 36 x 80 in college bed is $200 for the border rod innerspring, $219 for the encapsulated innerspring and $222 to $239 for the dual-density foam model.

There are no sale prices, no coupon codes, no bundles and no membership pricing anywhere in the catalog, and no financing is offered. Value read: the catalog is a wholesale-minded institutional price list rather than a consumer value proposition.

At $69 to $293 MTJ undercuts essentially every residential mattress brand and even most other institutional sellers on a per-unit basis, and MTJ makes its own value case on buying direct from the manufacturer and on longer replacement cycles - its own blog argues that a cheaper border rod bed costs more over time because the rod bends and stays bent and can puncture the cover, so replacement mattresses arrive sooner, whereas an encapsulated innerspring is a longer lasting design.

MTJ also sells through a Wholesale Gorilla trade portal that auto-invites approved accounts, applies a wholesale tag and marks them tax exempt, and holds inventory reservations for 60 days, which implies published prices are list rather than net for volume buyers.

What is not published is any freight cost, freight-inclusive threshold, volume discount schedule, minimum order quantity or annual price list, so a buyer cannot calculate landed cost from the website.

A shopper comparing MTJ with a $1,000 residential queen is not comparing like with like - MTJ sells one flat 4.5 in to 8 in slab with no comfort layers, no queen or king option, no trial and no return, so the real price comparison is against other institutional suppliers on total cost per bed-night and replacement interval, and MTJ publishes neither.

Chapter 05

How well do the mattresses hold up?

Why this matters to you: A mattress is a long buy. Lean on the written warranty and real owner reports to judge how it will last.

Durability is the entire pitch - MTJ's tagline is Mattresses That Last and its covers are sold on crack resistance, rip resistance and wipe-clean hygiene rather than on comfort.

Brand-reported durability: MTJ sells the border rod innerspring as improving durability and holding shape over time, but its own blog is blunt that a border rod is the weaker design, saying the rod bends quite easily and when it does it stays bent, can puncture the cover causing painful abrasion, and makes replacement arrive sooner, while the encapsulated innerspring is a longer lasting design that can be sat on at the edge without damage.

Cover durability claims are specific: the 210 denier polyurethane-coated hexagonal nylon cover is rated 40% stronger tear strength than standard nylon and described as flexible, crack resistant and pinhole-free; the thermal polyurethane-coated nylon covers on the Fusion and camp models will not crack over time and are marketed as lasting significantly longer than most standard vinyl covers; the clear and vinyl detention covers are described as more resistant to delaminating from flexing action, and the rip-proof versions cannot be ripped into shreds by hand even after a puncture.

The company also warns that using diluted disinfectants instead of its recommended 25 percent mild detergent and 75 percent distilled water solution can strip the antimicrobial treatment and cause premature cracking or delamination, which it says leads facilities to replace mattresses sooner.

Published service-life evidence: MTJ publishes no expected lifespan in years for any model, no weight ratings, no compression or fatigue testing, no foam density data and no independent durability testing.

The only quantified durability figures are seam strengths tested to withstand more than 52 lb per inch or more than 60 lb per inch of pressure, and the Waterproof Shelter mattress, whose seams MTJ describes as tested to withstand up to 60 lb per inch.

What backs those claims is a warranty of 1 to 5 years on seam bonding only, which is far shorter than the 10-year to lifetime warranties common in the residential market and is the clearest signal that these are high-turnover commercial products rather than long-life consumer beds.

Practical read: for institutional buyers the meaningful durability metric is cycles of disinfection and abuse rather than years of sleep, and MTJ's design answers that with single-piece covers, no stitching on the top detention and shelter beds, RF-welded seams and fungistatic treatments. For a household, the honest read is that a 4.5 in polyfiber slab with a 1-year seam warranty is not a decade-long mattress.

Chapter 06

Sleep trials, returns, exchanges and fees

Why this matters to you: Feel is hard to judge in a store or in a week. Know your exit plan and its cost before you pay.

There is no sleep trial, no return window and no exchange programme. MTJ's refund policy is unambiguous: all sales are final and MTJ does not offer refunds or accept returns for mattresses, because the mattresses are custom and made to order and cannot be resold once shipped.

No trial period of any length is published, no restocking fee schedule exists, no return shipping arrangement exists and no fee structure is published at all, because returns are simply not accepted.

The only recourse after purchase is a defect claim: MTJ instructs buyers to inspect the order on reception and contact the company immediately if an item is defective, damaged or incorrect, so the issue can be evaluated and resolved - email davidl@mtjamerican.com or call 1-828-396-1537.

That route leads into the warranty against manufacturing defects referenced in the terms and conditions and the per-model seam warranties described in the warranty column. Exchanges: none published; the practical mechanism for a wrong size or a change of mind is to contact MTJ by phone or the contact form before production, since orders are built to order, but no cancellation window, cut-off time or pre-production cancellation right is published.

Custom orders - and every MTJ order is effectively a custom order - carry no return right whatsoever. For a household shopper the practical consequence is that a bed cannot be tried and sent back: once a 36 x 80 in or a 25 in wide bed ships, it is yours unless it arrives defective, so measurement against the bed frame before ordering is the only protection.

Institutional buyers should note the same terms apply to them online, though their transactions may run through the wholesale portal or a purchase order with separately negotiated terms.

Chapter 07

Delivery, setup and old-mattress removal

Why this matters to you: Delivery terms decide your first week with the bed. Confirm the date, setup and old-bed removal before you pay.

Delivery is freight-based and made to order, with very little published detail. MTJ's shipping policy states only two things: orders generally need a minimum of 2 weeks to produce, and freight delivery then takes upwards of 3 to 5 days, varying by destination.

The camp collection page adds that MTJ is East Coast based and can deliver to most camps shortly after ordering, and advises ordering before camp begins because of the roughly two-week production lead time. Not published: shipping cost, free shipping thresholds, freight method or carrier, delivery regions, whether liftgate or inside delivery is included, and any residential versus commercial delivery distinction.

Live shipping rates requested through the storefront cart for both North Carolina and California addresses returned no rates at all, which means shipping is not calculated online and is almost certainly quoted at order or checkout on a freight basis.

White-glove delivery, in-home setup, mattress unboxing and old-mattress removal are not offered in any form and are not mentioned anywhere on the site - there is no haul-away programme, no state-mandated removal scheme and no disposal service, so buyers must dispose of old beds themselves, and MTJ notes as a benefit that its mattresses are accepted at most mattress recycling facilities.

Setup requirements: no foundation, box spring, frame or base specification is published for any model. The shelter mattresses are explicitly designed to lie directly on the floor where sleeping arrangements are flexible, and the waterproof shelter bed weighs under 20 lb to make that practical; the college and military beds weigh under 30 lb so they can be flipped by one person between the firm and soft faces.

None of the mattresses ship compressed or rolled in a box, and none are compatible with a bed-in-a-box unboxing process - these arrive as finished slabs. For a household buyer this means paying freight, waiting about two and a half weeks, accepting kerbside or dock delivery and doing everything else yourself.

Typical wait: 3 to 5 days

Chapter 08

Terms checked on the brand's site · recheck before you buy

What do the warranties cover?

Why this matters to you: A warranty is only as good as its terms. Read the written terms and use a supported base, because the wrong frame can end coverage.

Warranty coverage is thin, per-model and limited to seam bonding rather than to the mattress. The terms and conditions state only that all MTJ American mattresses include a warranty against manufacturing defects, and the company publishes no overarching warranty document: there is no warranty page on the website, and the /pages/warranty address does not work.

What is published sits in the Specifications block of each product page and covers the bonding of the seams, with the length varying by model and material. Five years on the bonding of seams: Sealed Foam Core Camp Mattress with Nylon Cover.

Three years on the bonding of seams: Fusion Advantage Detention Mattress, Secure Advantage Detention Mattress (whose seams are also reinforced with internal stitching), Waterproof Shelter Mattress, and Sealed Fusion Behavioral Health Mattress 36x80. Two years on the bonding of seams: Clear Advantage Detention Mattress and Secure Clear Detention Mattress.

One year on the bonding of seams: Econo Safe Detention Mattress, Econo Clear Detention Mattress, Value Safe Detention Mattress, Value Safe Shelter Mattress, Sealed Value Safe Behavioral Health Mattress 36X80, and the Sealed Foam Core Camp Mattress with Vinyl Cover.

No warranty of any kind is published for the Sewn Dual-Density Behavioral Health Mattress 36X80, the Fusion Dual Density Behavioral Health Mattress 36x80, the Dual-Density Foam College Mattress, the Innerspring College Mattress, the Dual-Density Foam Military Mattress, the InnerSpring Military Mattress, the Border Rod Innerspring Mattress with Tape-Edge Nylon Cover, or the Home Advantage Healthcare Mattress.

No published warranty covers core sagging, foam loss of resilience, cover cracking, delamination, punctures, rips, the cover treatment, the patented breathable vent, the fire barrier or the built-in pillow.

No warranty period, proration schedule, repair-or-replace remedy, labour or shipping responsibility, transferability, proof-of-purchase requirement, law tag requirement, foundation or base requirement, or voiding condition is published for any model. The claims route is to call 1-828-396-1537 or email davidl@mtjamerican.com and describe the defect, with MTJ saying it will evaluate and resolve the issue.

For comparison, this is a commercial seam warranty rather than a consumer mattress warranty: a residential buyer used to a 10-year or lifetime warranty covering sagging deeper than 1.5 in should treat MTJ's terms as a completely different category of protection, and institutional buyers should confirm coverage in writing at the purchase-order stage because the published terms are so sparse.

Review counts checked on each site · they change daily

Customer reviews and complaints

Why this matters to you: Star ratings depend on who posts and where. Read the low-star reviews for patterns, not just the average.

There is almost no consumer review footprint for MTJ American, which is expected for an institutional manufacturer that sells almost entirely to jails, prisons, behavioral health units, colleges, camps and shelters rather than to households.

Brand site: MTJ's storefront runs on Shopify with no review app installed anywhere in the product page code - no Judge.me, Yotpo, Okendo, Stamped, Loox or Shopify product reviews widget - so there are zero on-site ratings and zero on-site customer reviews for any of the 21 mattresses.

Third-party review platforms: no Trustpilot profile and no Sitejabber listing was found, no Google customer ratings could be retrieved, and searches across multiple engines returned no editorial mattress reviews, no YouTube reviews, no Reddit threads and no sleep-media coverage of MTJ American.

BBB: no Better Business Bureau profile for MTJ American could be located or retrieved; BBB blocks automated access and no MTJ profile appeared in BBB search results, so there is no BBB rating, no complaint count and no BBB customer review record to report.

The one strong independent dataset that does exist is federal procurement, from USAspending.gov: MTJ AMERICAN LLC, UEI M66NJGK98648 and DUNS 808178037, at 4276 Helena St, Hudson, NC 28638, is registered as a small business, a limited liability corporation, a manufacturer of goods and a US-owned business, and it holds 391 federal contract awards with 34 recipient-level transactions totalling $8,511,051.20 in the current recipient record and $16,074,060.95 in Department of Justice transaction amounts across the full 2007 to 2026 window.

That federal spending breaks down as Department of Justice $16,074,060.95, Department of Defense $259,735.60, Department of Veterans Affairs $5,701.60 and Department of Homeland Security $2,160.00, with the money concentrated in the Prison Industries Fund at $9,505,599.58, Marine Corps operation and maintenance at $42,400 and Federal Prison System salaries and expenses at $30,195.

By industry code the awards sit overwhelmingly under NAICS 337910 Mattress Manufacturing at $12,048,517.69, with smaller amounts in textile and fabric finishing, paper mills, nonwoven fabric mills and fiber, yarn and thread mills.

The largest single awards are with Federal Prison Industries / UNICOR and the Bureau of Prisons for vent sealed material for bedding and medical grade fabric - for example $308,548.85 in 2019, $258,482.44 in 2017, $244,922.50 awarded January 2026 for medical grade fabric, $243,586.94 in 2016, $186,692.08 in 2016, $179,677.68 in 2020 and $160,646.70 in 2024 - which is direct evidence that federal corrections keeps buying these beds, the closest thing to a repeat-purchase endorsement available for this brand.

Complaint themes: none published.

No complaints, disputes or quality allegations could be found in any public source, and there is no FTC action, recall or safety notice involving MTJ American. the absence of complaints is genuine but shallow - with no consumer sales channel, no review platform presence and no BBB file, there is simply no venue where a household buyer could complain, so the silence should be read as a lack of consumer exposure rather than as proof of satisfaction.

The federal contract renewal pattern is the more meaningful trust signal, and it points to a supplier that meets government specifications and keeps winning repeat orders. Buyers should note one operational caution straight from MTJ's own cleaning guidance: using disinfectants rather than its specified detergent solution can degrade the cover's antimicrobial treatment and cause premature cracking or delamination of cover materials.

Chapter 10

What are the mattresses made of?

Why this matters to you: Layer names say little without numbers. Ask what is inside your exact model, layer by layer.

Every MTJ American mattress is made to order at the company plant at 4276 Helena Street, Hudson, North Carolina, and the company states all mattresses are manufactured in the US. Construction splits into three core families and one cover rule.

Core families: polyfiber cores (fire-retardant polyester fiber or Max-Life densified polyester fiber, 5 in compressed to 4.5 in, used in Econo Safe, Econo Clear, Value Safe Detention, Clear Advantage, Secure Clear, Secure Advantage, Fusion Advantage, Value Safe Shelter and the 12 oz core in the Waterproof Shelter); foam cores (medium-density or high-density polyurethane foam, and dual-density laminated polyurethane foam with a firm high-density face and a softer low-density face, all described as 100% CertiPUR-US or US-CertiPur foam, used in the behavioral health beds, the college and military foam beds, the camp beds and the Home Advantage); and innerspring cores (steel coil spring units, either with a steel border rod and a fire barrier sandwiched between two polyester fiber layers and topped with medium-density CertiPUR-US foam, or encapsulated with firm foam side rails instead of a rod).

Covers: MTJ uses four cover materials - 210 denier fluid-proof polyurethane-coated nylon in navy blue with a hexagonal rip-stop pattern for college, military and the border rod model; thermal polyurethane-coated nylon that MTJ describes as pinhole-free and crack-resistant for Fusion Advantage, Sealed Fusion and the camp nylon model; clear vinyl, with or without a rip-stop scrim, for the searchable detention beds; and durable green or navy vinyl, with or without a polyester scrim lining, for the budget detention, shelter, camp vinyl and Sealed Value Safe beds.

The Sewn Dual-Density Behavioral Health bed uses a honeycomb 210 denier fabric chosen for softness instead of seal. Every cover is treated with a fungistatic agent against fungal growth and, on the nylon college, military and foam models, also an antimicrobial solution against mold, mildew and bacteria; MTJ publishes AATCC test references (Methods 30-1988, 147-1998 and 100-1999) and a Draize dermal skin irritation result of non-allergenic.

Seam construction is the main differentiator: RF-welded (radiofrequency bonded) seams rated over 52 lb per inch or over 60 lb per inch on single-piece covers with no stitching at all for detention and shelter beds, versus sewn seams on the college, military and border rod beds, versus sewn non-watertight seams on the Sewn Dual-Density behavioral health bed.

Flammability: the models publish compliance with California Technical Bulletin 129 and 603, 16 CFR Part 1632 and 1633, Fed Std 191, NFPA 701, CAL 117 and, on the innerspring and dual-density foam college and military beds, the BFD IX-11 fire test. Anti-fungal covers, rip-proof covers, built-in pillows and tamper-proof construction are the four features MTJ says set it apart.

Environmental claims are that every mattress is 100 percent recyclable, accepted at most mattress recycling facilities, and made with no hazardous chemicals or additional ingredients in processing.

No latex, wool, organic cotton, gel infusion, phase-change material, copper or graphite is used anywhere in the catalog, no foam densities in pounds per cubic foot are published, and no GREENGUARD, GOLS, GOTS, OEKO-TEX or similar third-party certification appears on any MTJ product page.

Where can you try and buy the mattresses?

Why this matters to you: Where you buy sets the price, the trial and who handles problems. Check the seller's terms, not just the brand's.

Online direct only, from the manufacturer. MTJ American sells at mtjamerican.com, a Shopify storefront, with the full 21-mattress catalog priced and orderable online and no showroom, no retail partners, no marketplace listings on Amazon, Walmart or Wayfair, and no dealer network published.

The company describes itself as a North Carolina based manufacturer of mattresses, pillows and pads and states on every product page that all MTJ American mattresses are manufactured directly from its plant in Hudson, NC. Headquarters and plant address: 4276 Helena Street Suite 5, Hudson, NC 28638. Phone 1-828-396-1537, Monday to Friday 8am to 4:30pm Eastern.

Sales and service email for order problems: davidl@mtjamerican.com. There is a contact form on the Contact Us page rather than a published email address for general sales, and the company invites custom sizes, custom colors and custom builds by request.

Trade buyers get a separate channel: the store runs the Wholesale Gorilla app with a wholesale login, an under-review account approval flow, automatic wholesale tagging, tax-exempt status for approved accounts, a separate wholesale catalog, a Quick Order Form and 60-day inventory reservation, which indicates real B2B pricing behind the published list prices.

Accepted payment methods on the storefront are American Express, Apple Pay, Diners Club, Discover, Google Pay, Mastercard, PayPal, Shop Pay, Venmo and Visa, and the published terms and conditions also allow payment by check - a commercial convention - with the buyer covering all collection costs including attorney fees if a check does not clear, plus 1.5 percent interest per month or the highest rate permitted by law and liquidated damages equal to double the bill, and the document is described as written evidence of a debt under N.C.G.S.

6-21.2.

Federal buyers already transact with this supplier: MTJ AMERICAN LLC holds 391 federal contract awards, concentrated in Department of Justice Federal Prison Industries / UNICOR and the Bureau of Prisons at $16.07 million in DOJ transaction amounts from 2007 to 2026, with smaller Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security totals, and it is registered as a small business, an LLC, a manufacturer of goods and a US-owned business under UEI M66NJGK98648.

A blog, authored by David Lezette, carries technical articles on RF welded seams, rip-proof covers, antimicrobial fabrics, encapsulated versus border rod innerspring and cleaning procedures. Company history is thin: the site says only that it has been making specialty mattresses for over 15 years, and no founding date, ownership structure, employee count, revenue or sibling brands are published anywhere.

Chapter 12

MTJ American vs. other mattress brands

Why this matters to you: A fair comparison needs the same facts for both beds. Line up price, trial and warranty for each one.

MTJ American does not compete with residential mattress brands at all - it competes with institutional and contract suppliers, and the honest comparison is category by category.

Versus residential DTC and legacy brands such as Saatva, Tempur-Pedic, Nectar, Purple or Tuft and Needle: those brands win outright on consumer fit, offering queen and king sizes, layered comfort, sleep trials of 100 nights or more, free returns, 10-year to lifetime warranties and white-glove delivery with old-mattress removal.

MTJ wins on price per bed, starting at $69 against $600 and up for even the cheapest residential queen, and on institutional features no consumer brand sells - transparent covers for contraband searches, rip-proof fabric that cannot be torn apart by hand, RF-welded seams rated over 52 to 60 lb per inch, fungistatic and antimicrobial cover treatments and built-in pillows. A household should not buy MTJ; a facility should not buy a Saatva.

Versus other institutional and contract mattress suppliers: MTJ's published advantages are buying direct from the manufacturer with no distributor margin, US manufacturing in Hudson NC, custom sizes and colors, a patented breathable vent that its competitors' sealed covers generally lack, and a choice of cover systems - clear vinyl for searching, rip-proof vinyl for security, coated nylon for comfort, green vinyl for value.

Its disadvantage is the same as its strength: every bed is a flat single-slab mattress with a polyfiber, foam or innerspring core, no comfort layering, and only a 1-year to 5-year seam warranty, so on comfort and stated longevity it cannot match premium mattress lines.

Versus a conventional residential innerspring: MTJ's own blog makes the case that an encapsulated innerspring with foam side rails beats a border rod design because a border rod bends easily, stays bent, can puncture the cover and abrades the skin on entry and exit, makes the bed harder to transport and costs more over time once replacements are counted - which is also MTJ's argument against cheap rival institutional beds.

Essentially MTJ is arguing that the cheapest institutional mattress is a false economy, while its own $69 to $96 models are exactly that product. Versus foam-only institutional beds: MTJ positions its high-density and dual-density CertiPUR-US foam against the cotton and low-density polyester cores it says most competitors use, and its innerspring and 8 in models against the 6 in mattresses it says most competitors sell.

Fixing that comparison independently is not possible: there is no published third-party lab testing, no editorial review and no comparative testing of MTJ against any rival brand, so every competitive claim in this column traces back to MTJ's own marketing.

The one neutral, verifiable competitive signal is federal procurement, and by that measure MTJ is an established supplier to US corrections: 391 federal contract awards and $16.07 million in Department of Justice transaction amounts from 2007 to 2026, concentrated with Federal Prison Industries / UNICOR and the Bureau of Prisons under mattress manufacturing NAICS 337910 - repeat federal buying, in a market where specifications and past performance decide the award, is the strongest independent evidence that MTJ competes successfully in its niche.

More brand reviews to compare: Molecule, Monarch Rest, Moonlight Slumber, MurMaid Mattress, NapQueen, Natura World.

Competitor details reflect published prices and specs on the date shown. Mattress brands may update prices and trial terms over time.

How we research and report

This page is an early draft built from our research sheet for MTJ American. We read the brand's own pages and public listings, and we do not test mattresses ourselves. Fields marked "Not yet researched" are still being checked.

Researched and written 22 September 2026 from official sources first.

MTJ's own pages were read in full before anything else: the homepage, the complete 21-product catalog pulled directly from the storefront product API, all 21 individual product pages with their Specifications blocks, the six category collections (Detention, Behavioral Health, College, Military, Camp, Shelter), the policies for refund, shipping and terms and conditions, the terms-and-conditions commercial payment clauses, the contact page,, the blog index and the individual technical articles on RF welded seams, rip-proof covers, antimicrobial fabrics, encapsulated innerspring versus border rod, and cleaning vinyl and nylon mattresses.

Live prices were checked against the storefront rather than against sale banners, and live shipping rates were tested through the cart. Where MTJ's own pages are missing or broken, we say so: the warranty, About Us and FAQ addresses do not work, the wholesale collection is empty, and the Home Advantage Healthcare Mattress is listed at $0.00 with no explanation.

Federal award records list contract, agency, NAICS and recipient details; there is no Better Business Bureau profile; and no review, complaint, editorial coverage or social presence appears on Trustpilot, Sitejabber, Yelp, YouTube, LinkedIn or Facebook as of Sept 2026.

Brand claims are labelled as brand-reported throughout, and independent data is labelled and dated; the federal procurement figures are the only substantial independent dataset found, and they come from USAspending.gov.

Gaps are recorded rather than filled: no foam densities, no weight ratings, no lifespan estimates, no independent durability or lab testing, no third-party certifications, no sleep-media reviews, no BBB file and no consumer review platform presence. - the homepage advertises pillows and pads that are absent from the catalog, the dual-density behavioral health model's own spec table says 6 in and 8 in while its variant list sells 5 in through 8 in, the Sewn Dual-Density bed lists no seam warranty, the camp vinyl mattress description mentions 4 in or 6 in cores while the variant list sells 6 in and 8 in, the Sewn Dual-Density page calls its bonded seams tamper resistant while the same page says its sewn seams are not water-tight, and the company markets itself as durable while its own blog argues the cheaper border rod build it still sells is the design most likely to fail.

Who is MTJ American?

A Hudson, North Carolina manufacturer of institutional mattresses, an LLC with over 15 years trading, registered under federal UEI M66NJGK98648, selling direct at mtjamerican.com to jails, prisons, behavioral health units, colleges, camps, shelters and the military.

Does MTJ American sell a normal queen or king mattress for a home?

No. The catalog has 21 mattresses in 25 in, 27 in, 30 in, 36 in and 38 in widths and 75 in or 80 in lengths, with no queen, king, full or twin XL residential sizing, and MTJ publishes no showroom and no consumer trial.

How much do the mattresses cost?

From $69 for the Econo Safe Detention Mattress to $293 for the 8 in Sewn Dual-Density Behavioral Health Mattress, with college and military beds at $200 to $239 and camp beds at $193 to $255; adding the built-in pillow costs $2 to $3.

Can I try one, or return one if I do not like it?

No. All sales are final, MTJ does not accept returns or give refunds because every mattress is custom and made to order, and there is no trial period; the only route is a defect claim made immediately on receipt by calling 1-828-396-1537 or emailing davidl@mtjamerican.com.

What warranty do I get?

Only a warranty on the bonding of the seams, and only on some models - 5 years on the camp nylon mattress, 3 years on Fusion Advantage, Secure Advantage, Waterproof Shelter and Sealed Fusion, 2 years on Clear Advantage and Secure Clear, 1 year on the Econo and Value Safe models and the camp vinyl and Sealed Value Safe beds, and no published warranty at all on eight of the 21 models.

How long does delivery take, and is there setup or old-mattress removal?

Production takes a minimum of about 2 weeks and freight then takes upwards of 3 to 5 days; shipping cost is not published and online rates return nothing, and there is no white-glove setup, no in-home assembly and no old-mattress haul-away service - though the mattresses are accepted at most mattress recycling facilities.

Are these beds used by the government?

Yes. USAspending.gov records MTJ AMERICAN LLC as holding 391 federal contract awards with about $16.07 million in Department of Justice transaction amounts from 2007 to 2026, concentrated in Federal Prison Industries / UNICOR and the Bureau of Prisons for vent sealed material for bedding and medical grade fabric.

Can I buy wholesale?

Yes - MTJ runs a Wholesale Gorilla trade portal with account approval, a wholesale catalog, tax-exempt status for approved accounts, a Quick Order Form and 60-day inventory reservation, though minimum order quantities and trade pricing are not published.
