The 30-Second Verdict: Quick Summary

Zinus makes six Balanced Comfort beds for shoppers on a budget, in all-foam or hybrid builds with one medium feel. If you want a firm or a soft bed, look elsewhere, because Zinus rates every model 5 out of 10 on its own firmness scale. A Queen costs $699 to $899, and you get 100 nights to try a bed bought on Zinus.com.

Key Strengths

  • If you want a 12-inch memory foam bed, the Signature Memory Foam costs $749 a Queen.
Good to Know
  • If you sleep hot, Zinus rates the $749 Core Hybrid and $699 Core Memory Foam 0 out of 10 for cooling on its own scale.
  • Owners are unhappy on Trustpilot, where 80% of 132 reviews are 1 star.
  • The 10-year warranty covers only the first buyer and skips foam dips under 1.5 inches.
  • The 100-night trial covers Zinus.com orders only, so a bed from another store follows that store's rules.
Chapter 01

Is Zinus the best mattress for you?

Why this matters to you: Every outside score here is for an older Zinus bed, so none of them rates the Balanced Comfort model you would buy.

Zinus makes sense when price is your limit: six beds, $699 to $899 for a Queen. Outside review sites scored only older Zinus beds, not these six.

Outside review scores
Review sites with a score: 5 outlets. Their scores: Six scores from 5 outlets, each on its own scale. Model they tested: Older Zinus beds, not Balanced Comfort. Each site tests in its own way, so read each row on its own.

Zinus is the best fit when you want a medium feel for $699 to $899 a Queen. If you want a memory foam bed that also comes in Firm, the Loom & Leaf costs $3,179, and NapLab scored its Relaxed Firm 8.75 out of 10 overall. Zinus still costs far less than the Loom & Leaf, though the Boring AF matches its $699 starting price on sale.

3.8
Mattress Clarity score

Mattress Clarity scored the 12-inch Cooling Gel Memory Foam bed 3.8 out of 5 and praised its price.

6.93
NapLab Green Tea score

NapLab gave the 12-inch Green Tea memory foam bed 6.93 overall, and pressure relief was its weakest point.

7.62
NapLab Hybrid score

NapLab gave the 10-inch Zinus Hybrid 7.62 overall, with praise for low motion transfer.

When Zinus makes sense
  • You want a 12-inch memory foam bed for $749, far below the Loom & Leaf's $3,179.
  • You want coils for less, and the Core Hybrid costs $749 a Queen, against $2,229 for the Saatva Classic.
When Another Mattress May Suit You Better
  • For memory foam that also comes in Firm, the Loom & Leaf costs $3,179, and NapLab scored its Relaxed Firm 8.75 out of 10.
  • For coils that sleep cool, NapLab gave the Saatva Classic 10 out of 10 for cooling, at $2,229.
  • For a longer trial on a budget, the Boring AF costs $699 on sale and comes with 365 nights.

Main configuration: Older Zinus beds, not Balanced Comfort. Each outlet uses its own method, so we don't combine these scores into one rating.

Reading the scores

Why we don't average the scores

Each site tested a different, older Zinus bed, so each score speaks for that one bed only and not for the Balanced Comfort line.

Chapter 02

Comfort and firmness: which mattress fits you

Why this matters to you: All six beds share one medium feel, so a lighter side sleeper or a heavier stomach sleeper gets no softer or firmer model to pick.

Every Balanced Comfort bed has the same medium feel, 5 out of 10 on Zinus's scale, so the six models differ in build and height, not firmness.

  • Zinus advises a softer bed for side sleepers.
  • Zinus advises a firmer bed for stomach sleepers.
  • Zinus says heavier people sink further, so beds feel softer to them.

  1. Neck: lie on your side with your usual pillow. Is your head level with your spine?
  2. Shoulders: on your side, notice whether your bottom shoulder feels pressed.
  3. Lower back: on your back, notice whether your lower back feels supported.
  4. Hips: notice whether your hips feel comfortable and whether you can turn easily.

Chapter 03

Compare the mattresses

Why this matters to you: The Core beds are 10 inches tall and the others 12, so check the height if your sheets or frame fit a thinner bed.

Zinus sells six models at one medium feel, so you choose by build and height: three all-foam beds and three hybrids from $699 to $899.

The Core beds are 10 inches tall and the Signature and Luxe beds are 12 inches. Each step up adds thicker or extra foam, and the Luxe beds add a copper and charcoal layer.

The three hybrids sit on 7.5-inch pocket coils. The foam beds have no coils, so they rest on base foam instead.

Mattress prices and value

Why this matters to you: The Luxe beds come in no Twin, so a Twin shopper's choice stops at the Core and Signature beds.

A Zinus Queen costs $699 to $899, depending on the model.

The flagship Signature Memory Foam runs from $549 for a Twin to $849 for a King. The Luxe beds come in Full, Queen and King only.

Shipping is free to the 48 contiguous states and DC. Buyers in California, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Oregon may pay a state recycling fee at checkout. The delivery section covers timing and what arrives at your door.

Chapter 05

How well do the mattresses hold up?

Why this matters to you: Zinus's warranty skips foam dips under 1.5 inches, so a bed that softens a little is yours to live with.

Zinus says its Signature Memory Foam means you never settle for a bed that sags, softens or loses its shape, and it backs its mattresses with a 10-year warranty.

The Signature and Luxe beds use 12 inches of foam or foam over coils, and the Core beds use 10. Zinus's warranty text says foam dips under 1.5 inches are not covered, and normal softening during break-in is not a defect it will fix.

What to watch for, and when:

  • In March 2022, Hyundai Department Store agreed to buy a 30% stake in Zinus from its founder and others.
  • Under the announced terms, Hyundai Department Store would become the largest shareholder at 35.82% after buying new shares too.
  • Zinus says its newly made beds use a carbon-rayon fire sleeve, after using fiberglass in the past.

Who owns Zinus: Hyundai Department Store, which would become the largest shareholder at 35.82% under terms announced in March 2022

Where sources disagree

  • Trustpilot reviewers of other Zinus beds report both a very sturdy bed and sagging within a month, so one review cannot tell you how a Balanced Comfort bed wears.
  • A GoodBed owner of the Green Tea Hybrid, a different bed from these six, reported lost support on the sides after 1 year, so it says little about how the Signature Memory Foam wears.
Chapter 06

Sleep trials, returns, exchanges and fees

Why this matters to you: In California, letting LoadUp haul away your old bed means a $75 cut from your refund if you then send the new one back.

You get 100 nights to try a bed from Zinus.com, and the only fee named is a $75 deduction if LoadUp picked up your old bed in California.

  • The trial starts on your delivery day.
  • The bed must stay clean, with no stains or smells.
  • Refunds usually land in 2 to 5 business days.

To return a bed, submit the return authorization form on the Zinus support page. Zinus sends a prepaid return label, and you need proof of purchase for a full refund.

The $75 per unit comes off your refund only if Zinus's partner LoadUp already hauled away your old mattress or box spring, which it does only for orders shipped to California.

Chapter 07

Delivery, setup and old-mattress removal

Why this matters to you: Zinus does not take away your old bed outside California, so plan how you will get rid of it before the new box shows up.

Your order ships free and usually arrives in 3 to 5 business days, after 1 business day to process.

FedEx Ground brings the bed rolled and boxed, with no signature needed, and it does not ship to Alaska or Hawaii. Zinus does not take away your old bed, except that its partner LoadUp picks it up on orders shipped to California.

Typical wait3 to 5 business days
  1. Zinus takes 1 business day to process your order.
  2. FedEx Ground drops the box at your door, no signature needed.
  3. You carry the box in and slide out the rolled bed yourself.
  4. The bed reaches full height in up to 72 hours, but you can sleep on it that night.

Chapter 08

What do the warranties cover?

Why this matters to you: Only the original invoice proves your purchase, so a lost receipt can end a claim.

Zinus covers its mattresses for 10 years against faulty workmanship and structural defects, with a replacement or a pro-rated refund at its choice.

  • Only the first buyer is covered.
  • Foam dips under 1.5 inches are not covered.
  • Keep the original invoice, the only proof Zinus accepts.

Chapter 10

What are the mattresses made of?

Why this matters to you: Zinus rates the Core beds 0 out of 10 for cooling and the Signature and Luxe beds 7 to 10 on its own scale, while older Zinus beds tested by Sleep Foundation and Sleepopolis ran warm.

Zinus beds are made of foam, or foam over 7.5-inch pocket coils, inside a jacquard cover. Zinus labels all six fiberglass free.

The Core beds use green tea memory foam or comfort foam, while the Signature and Luxe beds add gel-infused foam on top. The Luxe beds also add a copper and charcoal layer. Zinus rates them 10 out of 10 for cooling on its own scale, against 0 for the Core beds.

Safety labels, and what each one covers

Why these labels matter to you: A label tells you a part was tested for certain chemicals, not how the bed feels or how long it lasts. The labels run from most to least important. A gray label means we did not find it for this brand, which does not prove the brand lacks it.
CertiPUR-US
Foam in all six Balanced Comfort beds, as Zinus states
Certified foam is free of formaldehyde, heavy metals and certain phthalates, with low VOC emissions. It ranks first because every Balanced Comfort bed has foam layers and this label covers them.
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100
The cover and other fabric parts of all six beds, as Zinus states
Each thread and part is tested against over 1,000 harmful substances, and certificates last one year. It ranks second because it covers only fabric.
What these labels do and don't prove

Each label covers only what its certifier checks: CertiPUR-US covers the foam, and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 covers the cover and other fabric.

Chapter 11

Where can you try and buy the mattresses?

Why this matters to you: The Balanced Comfort beds sell online at Zinus.com, so the 100-night trial is your main way to try one.

You buy Zinus beds online at Zinus.com, which ships free to the 48 contiguous states and DC.

Where it sells: Online at Zinus.com. Target lists an older Green Tea mattress

Chapter 12

Zinus vs. other mattress brands

Why this matters to you: The Boring AF costs $50 less than the Signature Memory Foam only at its $699 sale price, and it gives 365 nights instead of 100.

The Boring AF wins on trial length and price: it gives 365 nights, and at its $699 sale price it costs $50 less than the Signature Memory Foam.

Zinus wins on price against the Saatva beds, because the Loom & Leaf costs $2,430 more than the Signature Memory Foam, and the Saatva Classic $1,430 more than the Signature Hybrid.

Each card pairs a rival with the Zinus Signature Memory Foam, or with the Signature Hybrid for the Saatva Classic, using the Queen price on each rival maker's own site, which is a sale price for the Boring AF.

Quick Answers

Quick Answers Before You Buy

Why this matters to you: Taking the cover off can void the warranty, so leave it on even to clean.

Yes, you can sleep on a Zinus bed the first night.

Below are short answers on safety, setup and policies.

Safety and materials

Are Zinus mattresses CertiPUR-US certified?

Yes. Zinus says the foam in its Balanced Comfort beds is CertiPUR-US certified, which it describes as tested to be free of harmful chemicals, heavy metals and formaldehyde. On its Signature Memory Foam page, Zinus also says the knitted cover is OEKO-TEX certified.

Can I take the cover off or wash it?

No. Zinus says the covers should never come off and are not washable, because removing one could harm the fire safety barrier and void the warranty. A sewn-in label reminds you to leave it on.

Do Zinus mattresses have fiberglass?

Zinus labels all six Balanced Comfort beds fiberglass free. It says newly made beds use a carbon-rayon sleeve as the fire barrier, after using fiberglass in the past, so keep the cover on.

Buying and policies

Do I need a box spring for a Zinus mattress?

No. Zinus says its beds need only a flat surface, such as a platform frame or the floor, though it suggests a foundation for extra support. A slatted base or adjustable base also works.

Can I sleep on a Zinus mattress the first night?

Yes. Zinus says it is safe to sleep on the bed the first night, though it can take up to 72 hours to reach full height after you unbox it.

Is shipping free, and how long does it take?

Shipping is free. Zinus takes 1 business day to process an order and 3 to 5 business days to deliver, though one Zinus page says 3 to 7. A state recycling fee may apply in CA, CT, RI and OR.

How long is the Zinus sleep trial, and what does a return cost?

Beds bought on Zinus.com get a 100-night trial from delivery, with a prepaid return label. A $75 per unit fee comes off the refund only if Zinus's partner hauled away your old bed, which it does only in California. The trial section has the rest.

How long is the Zinus mattress warranty?

The warranty runs 10 years on mattresses bought new from an authorized retailer. Zinus either replaces the bed or gives a pro-rated refund, at its choice. The warranty section lists what voids it.

How we research: we read each brand's own pages and look for outside testers and owner reviews. We do not test beds ourselves. Read our method.
