The 30-second verdict

Yes, it suits most side sleepers under 230 pounds and may also work for back sleepers under 130 pounds. The catch is that Sleep Foundation says most back sleepers above 230 pounds may find it too soft for support. For a firmer feel, Bear Original by Bear may fit better; its Queen price is $998, versus The Purple Mattress's Queen list price of $1,599. Sleep Foundation scored its motion isolation 8/10, which may help if a partner shifts at night. Buy it only if you are a side sleeper under 230 pounds or a back sleeper under 130 pounds and want a medium-firm feel.

Pros
  • Grid airflow. Purple says the Grid's open-air columns maximize airflow and release body heat.
  • Stretch cover. Purple describes the Softflex cover as breathable stretch material that flexes with movement.
  • Foam certification. Purple says its polyurethane foam is certified by CertiPUR-US.
Cons
  • Edge support. Sleep Foundation scored edge support 6.5/10, so the edge may feel less secure when you sleep near it.

  • Noticeable bounce. Sleep Advisor rated its bounce 4/5, so it may not suit you if you want little bounce.
Feel & Fit

How firm is The Purple Mattress, and which firmness should you pick?

Purple describes this mattress as Medium-firm feel.

Sleep Foundation rated the Original Purple 6 out of 10, or medium firm, on its firmness scale. Mattress Clarity gave it 6.5/10 on its firmness scale. Sleepopolis rated the Purple Mattress 7 overall. GoodBed's scale put the Original Purple at Medium (5). These readings use different scales, so the numbers are not a head-to-head ranking.

If you sleep on your back or stomach and want medium-firm, Sleepopolis's lightweight tester Riley found that feel in both positions. Use that as a fit clue, not a promise for every sleeper.

Feel & Fit

Is The Purple Mattress right for your sleep position and body weight?

The Purple Mattress is a stronger fit for lighter side and back sleepers than for heavier stomach or back sleepers.

  • Side: Sleep Foundation rates it 8/10 under 130 lbs, 8.5/10 from 130 to 230 lbs, and 8/10 above 230 lbs. It says side sleepers under 230 lbs get pressure relief, while heavier side sleepers may lack support.
  • Back: Under 130 lbs, Sleep Foundation gives it 7/10 and says sleepers get lumbar support and pressure relief. From 130 to 230 lbs, its 6.5/10 rating reflects that some find support, while some prefer firmer. Above 230 lbs, the 5.5/10 rating favors a firmer mattress for most.
  • Stomach: Under 130 lbs, it earns 7/10 and these sleepers enjoy it most. From 130 to 230 lbs, it earns 6/10; Sleep Foundation says a firmer mattress suits stomach sleepers over 130 pounds. Above 230 lbs, its 5/10 rating comes with likely discomfort.

Purple says there is no weight limit, but suggests 300 pounds per person or 600 pounds total. Sleep Foundation rates edge support 6.5/10, a score to consider if you use the bed's perimeter.

Is The Purple Mattress good for back pain?

The Purple Mattress may suit some people with back pain, but it is not a sure fit. Purple says it is firm enough to support your back. GoodBed rated it Medium. Its tester found near-ideal back support and exceptional spinal alignment. Sleepopolis's lightweight tester felt aligned on her back but lacked lumbar cushioning; Sleepopolis says people with back pain may want more cushioning. Sleep Foundation lists people with back pain among the best-fit groups, yet says most heavier back sleepers may find this mattress too soft and want a firmer mattress. If you are heavier, consider a firmer option.

How cool or hot does it sleep?

Testers gave mixed results, so there is no clear warm-or-neutral verdict for the Purple. Purple says its breathable stretch Softflex cover and GelFlex Grid help dissipate heat; the Grid’s open-air columns boost airflow and release body heat. Sleepopolis recorded 66.8 degrees before lying on it and 77.9 degrees after 5 minutes, a rise of 11.1 degrees. NapLab measured a maximum surface temperature of 89.2°F after lying on it. Reviewed said it “simply refused to heat up” under an infrared bulb. Sleep Foundation rated Temperature Control 8/10, and RTINGS gave cooling 9.7.

Will you feel your partner move?

You may feel a restless partner move: outside results disagree on how well the Purple limits motion. Sleep Foundation rated motion isolation 8/10, while Sleep Advisor rated it 3/5. Reviewed also said it isolates motion well, but described the surface as squishy and bouncy. Separately, Sleep Advisor rated bounce 4/5. The split isolation results do not make this a sure choice for a light sleeper with a restless partner. Do not count on movement staying unnoticed if it wakes you easily.

Build & Safety

How is it built?

The Purple Mattress pairs a GelFlex Grid with foam under a Softflex cover. Its listed weight is 88 lbs, a figure to factor into moving it into place.

Top to bottom, Purple lists these parts:

  • Softflex cover
  • GelFlex Grid, Hyper-Elastic Polymer, 2 inches
  • Edge support foam, foam
  • Comfort foam, polyurethane foam, 3.5 inches
  • Base support foam, polyurethane foam, 4 inches

Purple says it is designed, assembled, and fulfilled in the USA. Check the listed layer names and thicknesses when comparing this build with another mattress listing.

Materials and certifications

The cover has a polyester-spandex top and a non-slip bottom made of polyester and acrylic latex. The top panel is 98% polyester and 2% spandex; the bottom panel is 74% polyester and 26% acrylic latex. CertiPUR-US covers the polyurethane foam, not the fabric. Intertek's Clean-Air Gold record lists The Original Purple Mattress under bedding. Check which part each certification names: the foam or the mattress listed as bedding.

Does The Purple Mattress have fiberglass?

Purple describes the Purple Mattress fire barrier as a fiberglass-free fire sock that is not chemically treated. That tells you the brand’s stated material and treatment, useful if those details affect your choice. You can weigh this model-specific description against your own preferences before buying.

What bed base does it need?

Purple says this mattress works on slats less than 3.5 inches apart. It also works with an adjustable base tested to at least 750 lb capacity. A metal frame must provide proper structural support, and not all frames do. Purple says a box spring is not compatible, so skip it.

How long will it last, and does it need flipping or rotating?

Lifespan estimates differ; Purple suggests 21 nights to adjust, says this one-sided mattress should not be flipped, and says rotation every three months or so is optional. Sleep Foundation estimates a typical mattress may last roughly six or seven years. Sleepopolis expects the Purple Mattress to last 7 to 10 years with upkeep; NapLab expects 7-10 years and says the lower foam layers limit its lifespan.

Delivery, setup and old mattress removal

Purple says shipping is free for The Purple Mattress; beds under 150 lbs ship by FedEx, while heavier beds use delivery partners for in-home setup. Ground delivery takes 5 to 10 business days after the bed leaves the warehouse, so plan from shipment, not checkout. Purple lists setup as free on Rejuvenate. Select Essential and Restore models have a $200 setup add-on. Old-mattress removal costs $0 with Rejuvenate or $200 with in-home setup on select Essential and Restore models. Confirm The Purple Mattress is included before paying for either service.

Typical wait: 5 to 10 business days by ground after the bed leaves the warehouse

  1. How it ships: FedEx for beds under 150 lbs; delivery partners for heavier beds and in-home setup
  2. Setup: Free on Rejuvenate; a $200 add-on for select Essential and Restore models (not PurpleFlex or PurpleRenew)

Trials, returns and fees

Purple says The Purple Mattress has a 100-night trial, giving you that period to decide whether to keep it. The mattress is an Essential model, so a return carries a $150 transportation charge deducted from your refund. That fee reduces what you get back if you decide not to keep the bed.

Your trial, night by night
  1. Day 1 The bed arrives and the trial starts
  2. At least 21 nights on their mattress The earliest night Purple takes a return or exchange
  3. Night 100 The last night to ask, unless a swap moves it (see Swap it below)
What each choice costs you
Keep it Nothing more to do
Return it $150 Essential, $250 Restore, $350 Rejuvenate transportation charge, deducted from the refund. Full product price of the mattress less the value of any discount, interest accrued, and transportation charges
Swap it One exchange allowed. The trial runs from the first delivery, or 30 days from the second bed if later; transport charges may apply

Not covered by the trial: Beds bought in stores follow the store policy

Trial: 100 nights. Put the last date in your calendar the day the bed arrives.

What does the warranty cover, and what voids it?

Purple says its warranty runs ten years from purchase for the original buyer, and a dip must be deeper than 1 inch to count. The cover has a 2-year term. The wrong base can void coverage, so check S10’s compatible-base rules before setup. Normal softening is not covered, so check the dip against the cutoff before deciding whether to claim.
