The 30-second verdict

Yes for shoppers who prefer a firm feel; no for those who want a softer bed. The catch is edge support: Sleep Foundation scored it 6.5/10, and tester Jeremy noticed some sag when sitting at the edge. Sleep Foundation rated it Firm (7). If you want a budget coil hybrid, Siena 8-inch Essential Hybrid is a better fit: its Queen list price is $299, versus PurpleFlex's Queen list price of $1,299, and it has a breathable top. Buy it only if you want a firm feel and edge sitting is not a priority.

  • Body dents. One owner said body dents started in the first few weeks.

How firm is the PurpleFlex, and which firmness should you pick?

Purple lists the PurpleFlex as Firm feel, so choose it if you prefer a firm mattress. Sleep Foundation rated it Firm (7) on its 10-point mattress firmness scale. Mattress Clarity rated it 7.5/10 on its firmness scale and says it may feel firmer or softer depending on your weight. Their scales differ, so do not compare the scores directly. Use them as separate signs of a firm feel. Choose based on whether you want a firm feel and how firm mattresses feel to you.

Is the PurpleFlex right for your sleep position and body weight?

Yes, the PurpleFlex can suit side, back, and stomach sleepers, with fit varying by weight. Sleep Foundation lists side sleepers over 130 lbs. and sleepers in larger bodies among its best fits. Use the scores for your usual sleep position to judge which weight band is the closest match.

WeightSideBackStomach
Under 130 lbs5.5/107/108/10
130-230 lbs6.5/107.5/108/10
Above 230 lbs7.5/107/107/10

Combination sleepers can compare the score for the position they spend most time in. Sleep Foundation rated edge support 6.5/10. Tester Jeremy noticed some sagging when sitting at the edge, but said it was not enough to roll a side sleeper out of bed. Choose it for a matching sleep position, not if you need a steady edge while sitting.

  2. Shoulders: ask if the shoulder under you settles in, or if you feel a pinch after a few minutes.
  3. Back: lying face up, slide a hand under your waist. A big gap or no room at all is a sign of a poor match.
  4. Hips: ask if your hips dip lower than your shoulders, like lying in a shallow bowl.

Is the PurpleFlex good for back pain?

The PurpleFlex may suit back sleepers seeking firm support, but do not count on it to ease back pain. Purple says its firm feel supports spine alignment and reduces lower back strain. Mattress Clarity says strong support helps back sleepers keep their spines neutral.

Sleep Foundation's back sleepers over 130 lb felt the PurpleFlex gave a reasonable balance of support. NapLab's tester felt building pressure in the lower back and shoulders, a caution for shoppers weighing it for back pain.

How cool or hot does it sleep?

Outside readings point to some heat build-up, not clearly neutral sleep. NapLab recorded a baseline of 81.1° F, a max of 90.7° F, and an ending reading of 85.8° F. Sleep Advisor’s temperature gun reading rose from 69.8 degrees to 75.5 degrees after lying on the mattress. These results suggest the surface warmed during both tests, which may matter if you want a consistently cool-feeling bed.

Will you feel your partner move?

Yes, you may feel your partner move: NapLab reports high motion transfer and very high bounce, with an acceleration range of 12.72 m/s² and total bounce height of 11.29”. Sleepiverse reports Motion isolation 7.1. Sleep Advisor reports Motion Isolation 2/5 and Bounce 4/5. Sleep Foundation reports Motion Isolation 7/10. Mattress Clarity reports Motion Isolation 3. For a light sleeper with a restless partner, these readings make movement a concern; Sleep Advisor’s bounce score also points to an active feel.

Build & Safety

How is it built?

The PurpleFlex uses a layered construction, with its parts running from top to bottom:

  • Softflex cover.
  • GelFlex Grid made of Hyper-Elastic Polymer, 2 inches thick.
  • Edge Support Foam.
  • Base Support Foam made of polyurethane foam, 6 inches thick.

The Queen weighs 77 lbs, a practical figure for planning delivery and setup. Check the route into your room and allow space to position the mattress on its frame. The materials and layer depths above give you a concrete way to compare this build with another mattress.

Materials and certifications

PurpleFlex's cover is made of polyester and rayon, and its certification claims have different scopes. The top panel is 100% polyester; the non-slip bottom panel is 65% rayon and 25% polyester. Purple says Clean-Air Gold covers mattress materials. Purple also says its polyurethane foam is CertiPUR-US certified, but that applies to foam only, not the whole mattress. We could not confirm the listing in the certifier's online directory.

Does the PurpleFlex have fiberglass?

Purple says the PurpleFlex fire barrier is a fiberglass-free fire sock. The brand also says its flame-retardant protocol does not include fiberglass. These are Purple's statements about the model. To check the specific mattress you are considering, look at the law tag sewn on that mattress before you decide whether to buy it.

What bed base does it need?

The PurpleFlex works with a solid surface base or slats less than 3.5 inches apart, or an adjustable base tested to at least 750 lbs. weight capacity, Purple says. Choose a frame that meets one of these rules. If you use an adjustable base, check its tested capacity before you buy.

How long will it last, and does it need flipping or rotating?

Mattress Clarity expects 7 to 10 years, while Sleep Foundation says comfort may be affected after six to seven years; Purple says this one-sided bed should not be flipped, and rotating it is optional. Treat the first as an expected lifespan and the second as a comfort warning, not the same measure. For planning, keep the earlier comfort reading in mind; the longer estimate does not promise the mattress will feel the same throughout.

Delivery, setup and old mattress removal

The brand says PurpleFlex ships free by ground in a box, with no setup or old-mattress removal option. The brand gives a delivery window of 5 to 10 business days after the bed leaves the warehouse. You must move and unpack it yourself, then arrange old-mattress removal separately.

Typical wait: 5 to 10 business days by ground after the bed leaves the warehouse

  1. How it ships: FedEx for beds under 150 lbs; delivery partners for heavier beds and in-home setup
  2. Setup: Free on Rejuvenate; a $200 add-on for select Essential and Restore models (not PurpleFlex or PurpleRenew)
  3. Old mattress: $0 with Rejuvenate; $200 with in-home setup on select Essential and Restore models

Trials, returns and fees

Purple gives PurpleFlex buyers a 100 nights trial, and Purple says the refund is the price less discounts, any interest, and the $150 Essential transportation charge. Use the amount left after those deductions when deciding whether a return makes sense.

Your trial, night by night
  1. Day 1 The bed arrives and the trial starts
  2. At least 21 nights on their mattress The earliest night Purple takes a return or exchange
  3. Night 100 The last night to ask, unless a swap moves it (see Swap it below)
What each choice costs you

What does the warranty cover, and what voids it?

Purple says its warranty covers dips deeper than 1 in and runs ten years from purchase for the original buyer. The cover term is 2 years, and normal softening is not covered. Using the wrong base can void coverage, so check the compatible-base rules above before setup.

What do owners like and complain about?

Owner feedback is positive on Purple’s own site, with praise for comfort and support alongside concerns about firmness. Purple’s site gives the mattress a 4.4 score from 704 reviews. Purple owners praise its comfort, back relief, and cushioning around the shoulders and hips. That rating is a useful sign of owner satisfaction, not a promise it will suit your body.

Walmart owners also praise comfort and back support, but report lower-back pain, a thin feel, and a mattress harder than expected. Mattress Clarity says side sleepers found pressure relief insufficient. TechRadar says most reviewers found the firmness comfortable and supportive, though some wanted a softer mattress. If you need a softer feel or side-sleeper pressure relief, compare carefully before buying.
