The 30-second verdict

Yes, the Bear Original is a sensible pick for most back and side sleepers, but its firmer feel may not suit you. For a budget-minded side or back sleeper, the Allswell Luxe Hybrid is a better fit: its Queen price is $387, while the Bear Original Queen list price is $998. Buy it only if you want an all-foam bed.

Pros
  • Extended trial. Bear offers a 365-night trial with free returns after 30 nights.
  • Certified foam. Bear says its foam is CertiPUR-US® certified.
  • Fiberglass-free barrier. Bear says the mattress is fiberglass-free and uses WhisperShield™ rayon as its fire barrier.
Cons
  • Base limits. A box spring is not compatible, and frame slats should be less than 5.5 inches apart.
  • Firm feel. Some owners found it too firm, so it may not suit you if you prefer a softer mattress.
  • Partner movement. A partner's movement may carry across the bed, so you could notice their turns.
Feel & Fit

How firm is the Bear Original, and which firmness should you pick?

The Bear Original is medium-firm, and the brand rates its feel 6.5-7/10. Mattress Clarity rated it 7/10 on its firmness scale. Sleepopolis scored it 7 out of 10 on its scale and called it a touch firmer than medium firm. GoodBed rated it Firm (3) on its scale. Sleep Foundation calls it Firm (7). The scales differ, so compare each label with its score rather than treating the numbers as equal. Pick this feel if you want medium-firm with a firm lean; the outside readings do not point to a soft feel.

Feel & Fit

Is the Bear Original right for your sleep position and body weight?

Naplab marks the Bear Original as a yes for side, back, and stomach sleepers under 150 pounds, while Sleep Foundation’s scores for sleepers over 230 pounds favor side sleeping. Combination sleepers in that heavier group should weigh every position they use.

  • Side: Sleep Foundation rates fit 8.5/10. The memory foam may be too thin to fully cushion hips and shoulders. Cushioning may fall short.
  • Back: Sleep Foundation rates fit 6.5/10. Some sleepers may sink too far into the memory foam and feel less supported. That may be a concern if support is a priority.
  • Stomach: Sleep Foundation rates fit 6/10. Stomach sleepers over 130 pounds tend to dislike the hug of the memory foam. That held-in feel may not suit you.

Sleep Foundation rates edge support 6.5/10, so factor in this score if you use the mattress edge.

Is the Bear Original good for back pain?

The Bear Original may help some people with back pain, but relief is not promised. Bear says its high-density foam base helps keep the spine properly aligned. That is the brand’s support claim.

Firmer support is the clearest fit for back support. Mattress Clarity’s physical therapist reviewer is Dr. Hannah Habeeb. She says people with back pain may value the support and limited sinkage. Sleep Doctor says relief is most likely for some back sleepers over 130 pounds. It also says this for side sleepers over 230 pounds. Sleepopolis reports physical therapist Dr. Joe Tedesco’s view. He considers it a good option for people with back pain. Treat these as opinions, not a guarantee.

How cool or hot does it sleep?

Outside findings are mixed and do not give a clear answer on whether it sleeps warm or neutral. Its listed cooling parts are a quilted Celliant® Infrared Cover and Gel Swirl Memory Foam. Bear says the gel draws heat away and disperses it. NapLab called its cooling mediocre and recorded a 92.5° F maximum temperature. Mattress Clarity called its cooling slightly above average and measured 73.1 degrees. Sleepopolis measured 71.9 degrees after 5 minutes. The National Council on Aging (NCOA) found about 3 degrees of temperature rise, the smallest of any mattress it tested.

Will you feel your partner move?

You may feel some of your partner's movement; motion isolation is how much movement reaches your side. Sleep Advisor rated motion isolation 3.5/5 and bounce 4/5. Sleep Junkie rated motion isolation 8/10, Sleep Foundation 7.5/10, and the National Council on Aging (NCOA) 4/5. For a light sleeper with a restless partner, these readings suggest some movement may reach your side, so do not count on every shift going unnoticed. The scores use different scales, so read each on its own.

How is it built?

The Bear Original has a quilted cover over foam layers and a high-density foam base.

Layers shown from top to bottom, not to scale.

  • Quilted Celliant® Infrared Cover: fabric with fibers that turn infrared.
  • Gel Swirl Memory Foam: memory foam with gel; Bear says the gel helps keep you cool.
  • Responsive Comfort Foam: firmer foam with a slight bounce; Bear says it holds up the layers above without a sinking feel.
  • High-Density Foundation Foam: strong, high-density base, 6 in thick.

Bear says it is made in the USA with parts from the USA and other countries. The Queen weighs 70 lb, which can affect delivery and setup.

The Bear Original has a quilted Celliant® infrared cover. GREENGUARD Gold covers the mattress. CertiPUR-US® covers its foam. This difference matters when you compare certification claims: a label for one part is not a label for the full mattress. Use the named coverage to judge each claim.

Does the Bear Original have fiberglass?

Bear says the Bear Original is fiberglass-free. Bear identifies its fire barrier as WhisperShield™ rayon, which the brand describes as inherently flame-proof. Bear says the mattress meets Federal Mattress Regulations 16 CFR 1633 and 1632. Check the law tag on your mattress. It lists the materials, so you can compare them with Bear’s description.

What bed base does it need?

Bear says Bear Original works on a firm, flat, sturdy platform or foundation, but not a box spring. Bear says a metal frame alone is not enough; add a supportive base on top. For this bed, Bear recommends slats less than 5.5 inches apart. Bear's wider base rule allows up to 5.5 inches, and gaps over 5.5 inches void the warranty. So aim for under 5.5 inches. Bear says an adjustable base works if it supports the mattress and sleepers and sits on a proper frame. Bear says its warranty does not cover sag from an unsupportive adjustable base.

BaseWhat the brand saysRules and warranty
Slatted base Allowed with limits (slats no more than 5.5 inches apart)Slats should be less than 5.5 inches apart. Slats more than 5.5 inches apart (more than 9 inches for Bear Cub) void the warranty.
Box spring Not allowed (listed as not compatible)A box spring is not compatible. An improper base voids; a box spring with slats more than 5.5 inches apart counts as improper.
Platform bed Allowed with limits (slats no more than 5.5 inches apart)A platform bed with slats less than 5.5 inches apart is recommended. Slats more than 5.5 inches apart void the warranty.
Adjustable base Allowed (most Bear mattresses are fully compatible)An adjustable base is recommended. Sag or indentation from an improper or unsupportive adjustable bed base is not covered.
Floor Allowed with limits (Bear recommends a foundation or bed frame instead)Allowed only as an exception; keep airflow and use a level, evenly supportive surface.
Metal frame Allowed with limits (use a foundation or base between frame and mattress; slats at least 2 inches wide and no more than 5.5 inches apart)A frame alone is not enough; the mattress needs a supportive foundation or base on top of the frame. Improper support systems or unsupported bed frames may void the mattress warranty.

How long will it last, and does it need flipping or rotating?

Sleep Foundation expects about six or seven years. Bear says to rotate the mattress head to foot, not flip it.

The Sleep Doctor expects this model to last longer than a traditional innerspring. It may not last as long as the average latex or hybrid. Tom's Guide gave it a 4/5 durability score. Bear says the break-in period is 30 nights. Most customers rotate the mattress every 3 to 6 months.

What does the warranty cover, and what voids it?

Bear says its limited lifetime warranty covers visible indentations over 1.5 inches. It covers mattresses bought starting 02/01/2025. Taking off the cover voids it. So does an improper base with slats more than 5.5 inches apart. Stains and liquid damage are not covered.

Keep proof of purchase to claim. Bear sends a replacement at no cost in years 1 to 10. After year 10, you pay a prorated replacement charge. The charge is 50 percent in years 11 to 15. It is 60 percent in years 16 to 20. In year 21 and later, it is 75 percent of the then current retail price.

What do owners like and complain about?

Owners describe both better rest and a firmness concern, so this bed may suit you if a firm feel works for you. Skip it if you prefer a softer mattress.

A Trustpilot owner reported improved sleep, waking refreshed, and improved recovery. Tom’s Guide found owner praise for support, comfort, and contouring. Its low-star reviewers often wanted a less firm feel. Positive reports center on rest and support.

One Reddit owner called the mattress painfully hard, while Sleep Junkie described split views around firmness. That makes firmness the clearest concern in owner feedback, not a guaranteed result for every sleeper. Weigh that risk against your own feel preference.

Has the Bear Original changed since it launched?

The Bear Original came out in 2017. Its feel and foam layers have changed since then.

By October 2023, GoodBed reported a new feel but the same basic build. By November 2025, two transition foam layers had become one denser layer. The top gel layer with graphite had become plain gel memory foam. A cover with Celliant was also offered.

In Spring 2026, the bed got a new outside look and a Celliant cover. By September 2026, the layers were a 0.75-inch quilted cover, 1-inch memory foam, 2-inch poly foam, and 6-inch support foam. The older tested build was 1.5-inch poly foam, 1.5-inch poly foam, and 7-inch support foam. Check older reviews against this newer build before you trust them.
