The 30-second verdict

No, not for most buyers: Bear changed its materials and layers after testing, so past test results may not match the bed you can buy now. If you sleep hot and want coil bounce, Saatva Classic is a better fit; its Queen price is $2,229, compared with Bear's Queen list price of $3,041. Bear offers a 365-night trial, with a 30-night minimum before return. Buy it only if that trial gives you enough time to decide.

Pros
  • Firmness choices. You can choose Soft, Medium, or Firm to get the feel you prefer.
  • Zoned coil support. Bear lists five targeted support zones in the individually wrapped coils, so support is aimed at set areas.
  • Adjustable base ready. Bear recommends an adjustable base, so you can pair the mattress with one.
  • No fiberglass fabric. Bear says the mattress meets federal fire safety rules without fiberglass fabric, useful if you want to avoid that material.
Cons
  • Partner movement. A partner's movement may carry across the bed, so you could notice turns.
  • Base limits. Your frame needs slats no more than 5.5 inches apart, and a box spring will not work.
  • Queen weight. At 115 lb, a Queen may be hard to move on your own.
Feel & Fit

How firm is the Elite Ultra Hybrid, and which firmness should you pick?

Pick Soft if you are a side or back sleeper up to 230 pounds, or a stomach sleeper under 130 pounds. Bear offers Soft (5/10), Medium (6/10), and Firm (7/10). Sleep Foundation’s team tested all three levels and gave Soft favorable ratings for those sleeper groups. Sleep Foundation rated it Medium (5) on its scale, with close contouring and targeted midsection support from zoned coils. Sleep Foundation’s Medium (5) and Bear’s Medium (6/10) use different scales, so they should not be compared directly.

Feel & Fit

Is the Elite Ultra Hybrid right for your sleep position and body weight?

For sleepers over 230 lbs, the Bear Elite Ultra Hybrid looks better for side than stomach sleep. For this weight group, Sleep Foundation rated side fit 7/10, back fit 6.5/10, and stomach fit 5.5/10. Side fit scored highest; stomach fit scored lowest. Sleep Foundation says side sleepers over 230 lbs liked the firmest model's support. For back and stomach sleepers over 130 lbs, the firm option earned the highest marks. Stomach sleepers chose it for stronger support. Choose by your main sleep position, since the fit scores differ.

Sleep Foundation rated edge support 7/10. Weigh that score if you sit or sleep near the edge.

Is the Elite Ultra Hybrid good for back pain?

Yes, testers name this mattress for back pain, but that does not promise pain relief. Bear says its support system has 8-inch zoned coils and enhanced lumbar support. Sleep Foundation names the Soft option its back-pain pick and gives it an 8.5/10 Test Lab Score. The Soft model received favorable ratings for side and back sleepers up to 230 pounds. The mattress contours closely without sacrificing support. RTINGS.com names the Bear Elite Ultra Hybrid its best mattress for back pain, citing balanced support and pressure relief. Zoned coils help keep the spine aligned and prevent aches.

Will you feel your partner move?

You may feel a restless partner move; these readings do not guarantee motion stays unnoticed. NapLab recorded motion transfer of 9.89 m/s² acceleration range and 8.94 in total bounce height. RTINGS.com scored motion isolation 8.1 and bounciness 7.4. Sleep Foundation gave motion isolation 8.5/10 and called it a standout feature. Materials and certifications

Bear says the cover fabric has fibers that convert excess body heat into infrared energy. GREENGUARD Gold applies to the mattress, and CertiPUR-US® applies to its foam. When you compare labels, match each one to the part it names. A foam label is not the same as a label for the full mattress.

What bed base does it need?

Use a firm, flat, sturdy platform or slatted base with slats no more than 5.5 inches apart; Bear says wider gaps void the warranty. Bear also recommends an adjustable base. For that setup, Bear requires a matching adjustable base that supports the mattress and sleepers, plus a proper bed frame. Bear says sag or indentation from an improper or unsupportive adjustable base is not covered. Do not use a box spring.

Slatted base Allowed with limits (slats no more than 5.5 inches apart)Not compatible with slats more than 5.5 inches apart. Slats more than 5.5 inches apart (more than 9 inches for Bear Cub) void the warranty.
Box spring Not allowed (listed as not compatible)Not compatible. An improper base voids; a box spring with slats more than 5.5 inches apart counts as improper.
Platform bed Allowed with limits (slats no more than 5.5 inches apart)Recommended with slats less than 5.5 inches apart. Slats more than 5.5 inches apart void the warranty.
Adjustable base Allowed (most Bear mattresses are fully compatible)Recommended. Sag or indentation from an improper or unsupportive adjustable bed base is not covered.
Floor Allowed with limits (Bear recommends a foundation or bed frame instead)Allowed only as an exception; keep airflow and use a level, evenly supportive surface.
Metal frame Allowed with limits (use a foundation or base between frame and mattress; slats at least 2 inches wide and no more than 5.5 inches apart)A frame alone is not enough; the mattress needs a supportive foundation or base on top of the frame. Improper support systems or unsupported bed frames may void the mattress warranty.
