The 30-second verdict
Yes, most buyers looking for a medium-firm hybrid should consider the Bear Original Hybrid. The catch is that it comes in one firmness. If you sleep hot and want a bouncy innerspring feel, the Saatva Classic may fit you better. Its Queen is $2,229; the Bear Original Hybrid Queen list price is $1,184. If you share your bed, your partner's movement will carry across it, so you may notice it. Buy it only if you want this feel and your base is compatible.
Best forSide sleepers who want a medium-firm hybrid
Not ideal forStomach sleepers above 230 lbs
Original Hybrid
Sizes7Twin to Split King
Pros
Side sleeper comfort. The foam can ease pressure while the pocketed coils give deeper support when you sleep on your side.
Optional cooling layer. Bear says the optional CoolForce™ Layer with PCM helps draw heat away from your body.
Airflow from coils. Bear says its individually wrapped coils provide better airflow, which may help you sleep cooler.
Cons
Stomach sleeper fit. If you sleep on your stomach and weigh above 230 lbs, another bed may fit you better.
Deeper sinkage. If you sleep on your back or stomach, the deeper sinkage may feel like too much.
Box spring limit. Bear lists box springs as incompatible, so use a different base.
How firm is the Original Hybrid, and which firmness should you pick?
The Bear Original Hybrid has one firmness choice: Medium-Firm. Bear rates it 6/10 (medium-firm). NapLab also calls it medium-firm. It scores 6 out of 10 on its scale, where 10 is the most firm. Both readings agree. Shoppers who like a medium-firm feel have a clear match. Want something softer or firmer? This model has no other setting. Compare what you like with another bed’s stated firmness before you choose. NapLab’s reading was updated October 19, 2026.

Is the Original Hybrid right for your sleep position and body weight?
The Bear Original Hybrid is a stronger fit for side sleepers than for back or stomach sleepers. Sleep Foundation’s ratings favor side sleeping across the three weight bands and put edge support at 7.5/10. Back and stomach scores fall as weight rises, making those positions less certain fits for heavier sleepers.

NapLab’s separate Under 150 lbs. view marks side as Yes, while back and stomach are Maybe. Combination sleepers can use their main position as the guide, since ratings differ by position. If edge support matters to you, consider the edge result alongside how often you sit or sleep near the perimeter.

Neck: lying on your side, ask if your pillow and the bed keep your head in line with your spine.
Shoulders: ask if the shoulder under you settles in, or if you feel a pinch after a few minutes.
Back: lying face up, slide a hand under your waist and ask if your lower back feels supported or left hanging.
Hips: ask if your hips dip lower than your shoulders, like lying in a shallow bowl.
Four checks: lie still for a few minutes in the position you sleep in most, then notice how each spot feels. These are comfort checks, not a medical test.Sources (2)
The Bear Original Hybrid may suit some people with back pain, but the outside readings are not decisive. Bear says its 6-inch coil system helps keep the spine lifted and aligned. Sleep Foundation’s testing puts it among solid choices for chronic or frequent back pain. NapLab marks it “Maybe” for back sleepers in all three listed weight bands. Its table does not give a clear yes for any band. These claims do not promise pain relief.

It trends warm rather than neutral: NapLab’s readings show heat build-up. NapLab recorded 79.9° F at baseline, 91.0° F at maximum, and 82.6° F at the end. Bear lists a quilted Celliant® infrared cover, gel swirl memory foam, and individually wrapped springs and coils for cooling airflow. Bear says the optional CoolForce™ Layer adds PCM to draw heat away and create a cool-to-the-touch sleep surface. That layer is an upgrade, so it is not part of every version.

Yes, a light sleeper may feel a restless partner move. NapLab rated the Bear Original Hybrid’s motion transfer as moderate. It gave the bed a motion transfer score of 7.7. NapLab measured acceleration at 10.15 m/s². It also measured bounce at 8.12″ and rated it moderate. Expect some movement to carry across the bed. The bed does not fully block movement. Its bounce reading also points to a springy feel when a partner moves. If movement wakes you easily, these readings are a reason to be cautious.

The cover is Celliant fabric. Bear says it pairs with cushioning quilt foam for comfort and overnight recovery. CertiPUR-US® applies to the foam; GREENGUARD Gold covers the whole mattress. The key difference is what each covers. One names a part; the other covers the whole bed.
No. Bear says the Original Hybrid is fiberglass-free. It meets fire safety rules without fiberglass. Bear says its fire barrier is a blend of non-woven hydrated silica, rayon, polyester, and cotton. So if you want to know what is in the barrier, that blend is the answer.

Fiberglass-free; meets strict fire safety standards without fiberglass fabric.

Bear recommends a bed frame, foundation, or platform with slats less than 5.5 inches apart. A platform should be firm, flat, and sturdy. Bear also recommends a matching adjustable base. It must support the mattress and sleepers, with a proper bed frame. A box spring is not compatible. Floor use is an exception. Keep airflow and use a level, evenly supportive surface. A metal frame needs a supportive base or foundation above it.
Bear says slats more than 5.5 inches apart void the warranty. It does not cover sag or dips if the adjustable base is improper or unsupportive.

Rules and warranty
Slatted base
Allowed with limits (slats no more than 5.5 inches apart)
Recommended slats less than 5.5 inches apart. Slats more than 5.5 inches apart (more than 9 inches for Bear Cub) void the warranty.
Box spring
Not allowed (listed as not compatible)
Not compatible. An improper base voids; a box spring with slats more than 5.5 inches apart counts as improper.
Platform bed
Allowed with limits (slats no more than 5.5 inches apart)
Recommended platform bed with slats less than 5.5 inches apart. Slats more than 5.5 inches apart void the warranty.
Adjustable base
Allowed (most Bear mattresses are fully compatible)
Recommended adjustable base. Sag or indentation from an improper or unsupportive adjustable bed base is not covered.
Floor
Allowed with limits (Bear recommends a foundation or bed frame instead)
Allowed only as an exception; keep airflow and use a level, evenly supportive surface.
Metal frame
Allowed with limits (use a foundation or base between frame and mattress; slats at least 2 inches wide and no more than 5.5 inches apart)
A frame alone is not enough; the mattress needs a supportive foundation or base on top of the frame. Improper support systems or unsupported bed frames may void the mattress warranty.
How long will it last, and does it need flipping or rotating?
Yawnder calls this a projected 5-year hold, not a promised lifespan. Yawnder gives it a durability score of 8.3 out of 10. Bear says to rotate it head to foot and not to flip it. Most owners rotate it every 3 to 6 months.
NapLab measured foam densities of 1.39 to 1.96 PCF. Denser foam tends to last longer, but these numbers do not set a lifespan. You must keep it 30 nights before you can ask for a free return, so give it that time before you decide.
Rotate or flip
Do not flip; Bear recommends periodic head-to-foot rotation; most customers rotate every 3-6 months.
